MANILA, Philippines – the Philippines is still a Nokia country, an executive of the mobile phone maker said during the launch of its latest model, the Lumia 610.

“the Philippine market is a very strong Nokia market. It still is a Nokia country. Nokia is in the hearts and minds of Filipinos,” Dharmesh Goshalia, the company’s general manager and head of sales for the Philippines told reporters Friday night.

“This is one of the reasons why we brought different Lumia products. we want to address the different price segments and we believe that each of the products fits all brackets,” said Goshalia, who however refused to disclose Nokia’s market share in the country.

Besides the 610, Nokia also launched recently the Lumia 710 and 800, all of which run on the Windows platform. the company next month will begin offering the Lumia 900.

“we would say that the products we are launching now are the right products needed in this market. the range of smartphones that we are bringing into this market covers all segments of the smartphone from the entry level all the way to the top,” Goshalia said.

“I would that if I look at the anticipation in the Philippine market, the anticipation is growing day by day. This is something that consumers are anticipating. there are a lot of pre-orders,” he said.

Nokia has been under siege worldwide, as Apple and Blackberry, not to mention other smartphone makers that use the Android platform, gain popularity.

Mobile Phones - Microsoft wins import ban on some Motorola phones - (5/20/2012)

The U.S. International Trade Commission handed Microsoft a victory in one of its patent disputes with Motorola, banning the import of some Motorola phones.

The agency found that Motorola violated a Microsoft patent for that software that creates meeting requests and schedules them on mobile devices. Motorola will likely need to alter the software in the phones before they come into the United States.

The ruling is now subject to a 60-day presidential review. Motorola has to post a bond of 33 cents for each phone that has entered the United States.

“Microsoft started its ITC investigation asserting nine patents against Motorola Mobility,” Motorola said in a statement. “Although we are disappointed by the Commission’s ruling that certain Motorola Mobility products violated one patent, we look forward to reading the full opinion to understand its reasoning…. We will explore all options including appeal.”

The dispute revolves around Motorola’s use of the scheduling technology in some of its devices, including Droid phones and Xoomtablets, that run Google’s mobileAndroid operating system. Microsoft argued that the software infringed on its ActiveSync technology.

An administrative law judge ruled in December that Motorola infringed on one of the nine patents that Microsoft had cited. Today’s decision, from the full commission largely upholds that ruling.

“We’re pleased the full Commission agreed that Motorola has infringed Microsoft’s intellectual property, and we hope that now Motorola will be willing to join the vast majority of Android device makers selling phones in the US by taking a license to our patents,” Microsoft’s corporate vice president and deputy general counsel David Howard said in a statement.

Technology companies in recent years have increasingly turned to the ITC to settle their disputes. Companies can pursue an ITC case in parallel with civil lawsuits, and the threat of an embargo on products typically forces companies to settle more quickly.

-analogue Phones - Choosing the Right Business Phone System - (5/20/2012)

It can be rather overwhelming when trying to decide the best phone system for your business. Sorting through the specifics of the various business phone system types and matching them with your business needs can be pretty complex.

Fortunately, you have resources at your disposal (such as this site). in essence, the best way to begin choosing the right phone system is by answering a small list of very specific questions. These are:

  • What is the number of lines that you will need?
  • Where and how many locations/offices are being covered?
  • Do you need to accommodate existing office equipment?
  • Do you have the space to install a switching device if needed?
  • What features does your business require?
  • Will your business need to room for expansion?

Determining how many lines that your business will need is extremely important. But it’s also one of the easiest questions to answer. The one thing to take into consider, though, is the question of how many phone lines that require their own separate phone numbers. This, of course, will need to be figured into the budget since it can be a significant expense with a larger business.

If your business has more than one location then you will need to assess what type of connectivity each location will need. For businesses that have multiple locations, a VoIP business phone system will work quite well. it also has the advantage of remote features configuration capability.

You save a lot of money if you have existing phone equipment that can be used with the new system. other types of equipment, other than handsets, headsets and conference tools, may include fax machines and modems. Checking for compatibility is a smart move before making any purchase decisions.

Another consideration involving your office is whether or not you have the space to accommodate a switching device. A switching device will handle all the switching for; PBX systems, IP PBX systems and Key Systems. Systems that don’t require a switching device are; a Hosted VoIP PBX system and a KSU-less system.

As far as the phone configuration itself, you will want to take a good look at the features that your business will need. But there is also the question of the features that will be needed when the business expands or in the event of a change in focus. Fortunately, with a VoIP system, features can be added as they are needed which saves money. so the main issue will be what features are available for future additions. For example, you may want to ask if you will need future integration with Presence Technology or Customer Relationship Management Software (CRM). These are in addition to the standard features that come with the system initially.

While considering your businesses’ future needs, you will also entertain the idea of business expansion. if business expansion is a surety, then you might want to take a look at a VoIP system. This is because VoIP phone systems are known for their scalability.

-motorola Accessories - Lollipop Chainsaw: Saucy zombie-scrapper shows off hands-on fun - (5/20/2012)

The new issue of PSM3 is on sale now.

Most schoolgirls would be traumatised by having to chainsaw the head off their boyfriend, but eighteen-year-old Juliet Starling is taking it in her stride. In fact she’s still got his noggin attached to her belt: he’s part sweetheart companion, part fashion accessory. sometimes she even slams him onto the corpses of her zombie cheerleader foes and makes him dance around. This is a very odd game.

with Lollipop Chainsaw Suda51 (eccentric creator of Killer7 and Shadows of the Damned) has the likes of Buffy firmly in his sights with a bloody journey through a school packed with zombies, mayhem and rainbows. Combat is based around Juliet’s high-kicking Cheerleader attacks, which herd her foes together before she lets rip with her chainsaw to cascade the battlefield with combo bonuses, blood and glitter. every kill is rewarded with a shower of golden coins that, in turn, goeson to fund the unlock of ever-more ridiculous combos and move-sets.

DANCE OF DEATH

The game isn’t all locker rooms and math class. Our recent attempt to rescue Juliet’s sister Rosalyn took place on the dancefloors of the Fulci Fun Centre. as you pirouette and leap around its gaming arcades the action is vaguely hypnotic – even if this brand of walking dead can take an awful lot of punishment, and is rather good at knocking you over onto your delicate cheerleading arse.

once the dead have been dismembered, however, part of Juliet’s mission can be to beam herself into the retro games around her, hilariously musing “This is great! I’m such a game geek!” as she does so. This triggers some strange minigames that underline both the game’s eccentricity and its wild, veering tone. One minute you’re playing a Pac-Man clone, the next you’re engaging in some neon 2D combat as Juliet scales a building. these are all unnecessary distractions from the task at hand, and universally less fun than pummelling jock zombies armed with deadhead-invigorating ghetto blasters…

The level comes to an end with a face off against a chap called Josey – who looks more than a little like The Mighty Boosh’s Spirit of Jazz. he zips around on a UFO with two skull-faced bikini ladies while wielding a keytar (like you do), and Juliet’s more occasionally-used chain gun ability has to come out to play to take him down. All set, of course, to some glorious funk music.

There’s a real danger that Lollipop Chainsaw might be something of a scrappy affair, and the visuals don’t exactly sing. but it’s built on solid combat and a somewhat endearing puerility. Juliet could still be (two, four, six, eight) someone we appreciate.

-digital Phones - TAT Collaborates with Nokia Thailand to Launch Mobile Application on Windows Phone - (5/20/2012)

Bangkok, May 18, 2012 – mr Suraphon Svetasreni, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), presided over the press conference ‘Promoting Thai Tourism on Digital Platforms and Mobile Applications’ at the Enigma Theatre, Siam Paragon, affirming official cooperation between the organisation and Nokia Thailand. the host of the event also included mr Jirapat Janjerdsak, Nokia’s head ecosystem developer. the conference introduced ‘The New amazing Thailand’ mobile application and a new game ‘Thailand Racing by Smile Land’ for Nokia smartphones that run the Windows Phone operating system, following its success on other mobile platforms.

“I’m truly glad that TAT finally has the chance to work with Nokia on an innovation that will help promote Thailand’s tourism using Nokia smartphones running Windows Phone. after our huge success on the iPhone, iPad, Android phones, Blackberry and Nokia smartphones, TAT decided to embrace the Windows Phone mobiles so that we would cover all the smartphones in the market. Therefore, to celebrate our achievement, we are presenting ‘The New amazing Thailand’ mobile application now available for every mobile operating system, renovated with new astonishing designs and packed with comprehensive contents plus special travel offers from numerous online agencies in Thailand. TAT has expected that the total downloads of the app should double from its previous release, which has been downloaded for more than 300,000 times so far by smartphone users around the world. now we are confident to consider a mobile application as an absolutely potential channel for promoting Thai tourism to people on the other side of the world. It is such a productive collaboration we have with Nokia, and we are looking forward to welcoming any other innovations that would help promote Thailand to the world and encourage tourism activities in our country like the amazing Thailand app does,” said mr Suraphon.

-cases & Pouches For Samsung - How To Decorate Your Cell Phone - (5/20/2012)

Adding decoration to your cell phone is a fantastic way to express yourself, and add a hint of cheer to everyday life. whether you are very busy or want to put some time into your cell phone, there are decorating options for you. Here are some basic guidelines on how you can make your cell phone not just a phone, but a glamorous accessory.

First off, you need to decide how much time and effort you want to put into decorating your cell phone. there are some easy pre-made cell phone covers for those of us who are less crafty/artistically inclined, and the most difficult part of that is choosing from the variety of styles. there are a myriad of styles offered in covers from fuzzy to slinky pink to polka-dots or anything else that you can imagine. Once you’ve purchased it all you have to do is to apply your snazzy new cover to your cell phone and viola!

There are lots and other fun and easy ways to add decoration to your phone. Adding a key chain or charm bracelet is a great way to decorate it. You also can cover it with stickers, and the stickers are unlimited supplies. Those of us with children know the beginning of how many stickers are available, so let your imagination run rampant with your sticker selection. there are also lots of jewels/rhinestones that you can buy in craft stores to add a bit of bling to your phone. Some are stickers, so you can just stick them onto your cell phone. Others will direct you to glue onto the phone, which can be a bit messy and time consuming.

If you want to put a little more effort and thought to your decorations there are lots of way to personalize your phone, but painting is my favorite way to decorate phones. Here is how I have decorated past cell phones with nail polish! Keep in mind, once you put on the nail polish you may not be able to remove it, so you want to make sure you have the colors and design sketched out before hand. To test if the nail polish can be removed you can do a test on the battery cover. Apply a small amount, and then see if it can be removed by nail polish remover.

To start off, make your life by removing the battery cover before you start painting. this will make the cell phone easier to handle as you carefully apply your design. The battery cover is a great place to start painting, because it is light and easy to handle. When you apply the nail polish give it six hours to dry, so that you won’t smear and smudge up your carefully planned design. Make sure you have a clean surface by a window to set the phone for the best drying results.

Bluetooth Accessories - What's the Future for Laptops? - (5/20/2012)

Sandwiched between powerful desktops and tablets

I spent part of last week in new Orleans at CTIA, the big wireless telecom show. while I do attend CTIA when I can, this year’s location was the real draw for me. For the past 15 years, I have tried to take at least two “eating vacations” each year. Travelling throughout my career, I have been stuck in all types of places around the world and checking out the local food scene has become kind of a hobby. so, I usually work for two or three days and, if I like the food prospects, I extend my stay for a few days just to eat.

I must admit that I am really partial to new Orleans and look for reasons to go back there whenever I can. That’s why, when I got word that this year’s CTIA was in new Orleans, I immediately booked my flights and started dreaming of crawfish, jambalaya, red beans and rice, and po’ boys. Interestingly, this show is no longer a major venue for new phone introductions – those are now done at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona each February. so, CTIA has become more focused on things like infrastructure, carrier issues, and trends. I did get to see some new phones that will be launched later in the year under NDA, but I can’t talk about them just yet.

One of the more interesting discussions at the show revolved around the role of tablets and their future. the carriers see them as new ways to add revenue by selling data plans since people who have tablets tend to want them to be connected all of the time. although 85 percent of tablets sold today do not include a 3G or 4 G radio inside, the carriers will be making a bigger push to include them in new releases. Carriers tell me their goal is to get to at least 40 percent penetration by 2015. by then, they hope to get their data pricing down into more consumer friendly ranges and with that, demand for wireless data services in tablets should increase.

Many conversations also addressed the future of tablets in general and how they could impact the laptop landscape. quite a few of the folks I spoke with have started to use Bluetooth keyboards with their tablets and they say that using a tablet/keyboard combo really changes their thinking about laptops. a lot of them only take their tablet/keyboard with them on short trips, leaving the laptop home. I have heard this case repeated a lot lately by tablet users. many find themselves spending more time with the tablet since they can do as much as 80 percent of their work on it and thus they are relying less and less on the laptop.

Given these folks’ smartphone and tablet focus, I asked some execs whether they thought Motorola’s idea of creating a lapdock connection to the smartphone with a keyboard/screen accessory had legs. Not surprisingly, they seemed to think that such a product would have only limited success given the strong acceptance of tablets and the expected push by Intel and partners for Ultrabooks.

But these same execs, albeit telecom guys, pointed out that a connected tablet could eventually replace the laptop for most people. while this is a rather bold prediction on their part, I think they could be right. Now, I don’t think the laptop will ever go away completely, but I do think that more and more users, especially consumers, will realize that the tablet can get most of the job done. they may find ways to scale back the use of their laptops or do away with them altogether.

The key to this thinking is that, in the home, there may come a day when what consumers really want is a powerful all-in-one system that sits in the den or on a kitchen counter and serves as their information system and media center/server. the whole family can use it for big tasks, such as editing and organizing their personal photos, videos, and music collections. they could also use it for any other heavy lifting tasks like handling home finances, managing personal data, and writing. In this scenario, the all-in-one is the family’s communal system, but at the personal level, the family would share a couple of highly portable tablets as needed.

I have seen some preliminary research and there seems to be some real interest in this notion, especially in homes. As you may know, desktops sales have been declining for the past four years, but last year they stabilized. we are starting to see a small uptick in all-in-ones, especially since their prices have come down a lot over the last 18 months. to be fair, consumers could also buy a large and powerful laptop instead of an all-in-one, but if they really like touch devices, they might opt for all-in one touch systems such as HP’s TouchSmart desktop PC.

If this speculative trend becomes a reality, the ramifications for the laptop vendors could be significant because they sell the majority of their laptops to consumers. we won’t see business or enterprise users dumping their laptops any time soon, but if consumers use an all-in-one as a communal home PC, supplemented by a couple of tablets, laptops could fall by the wayside.

Although I don’t see this scenario playing out quickly, there is a real possibility that it could become a trend. And if so, today’s laptop vendors better get their tablet strategies in place soon. If they don’t, they will potentially lose any momentum they may have with their laptops today as consumer make tablets their primary mobile PCs.

Computer Networking Cables – Types and Usage FAQ

Many kinds of network cables are used for establishing different computer networks. these cables are used as per the diverse requirements of various kinds of computer network. Before setting up a network, you must learn about the varieties of networking cables.

For setting up a computer network, you need to understand several basic terms. Using switches, hubs and cables in a computer network is common but to gain maximum efficiency, the right kind of devices and cables are required. The cables are different from one another in terms of speed for transmission of data, reduction of crosstalk and modes of installation. Find answers to your Frequently asked Questions (FAQ’s) about different kinds of networking cables and their uses.

Q. what is an unshielded network cable?

A. Unshielded Twisted Pair cables are widely used with the Ethernet networks. The twisted wire pairs in the cable, as suggested by the name, are not shielded. eight individual copper wires (22 or 24 gauge) are twisted to make four pairs that restrict the signal corruption due to electromagnetic interference. UTP cables must adhere to the specifications regulating the number of twists that are permitted in defined length. a relatively smaller diameter of this cable is beneficial during installation. The speed and throughput of this cable is 10 to 1000 Mbps and is the most cost effective networking cable. This cable is extremely popular because it can be effectively used with most of the major networking infrastructure.

Q. what is a shielded network cable?

A. In the Shielded Twisted Pair cables, a metallic foil is used for wrapping each pair of copper wire which are then blanketed altogether in a metallic braid. STP not only reduces the outside disturbance like the EMI and RFI radiations but also the electrical noises in the cables like crosstalk and pair-to-pair to coupling. It is generally installed with the STP data connector but can also use RJ connector base. Unlike UTP, number of twisted pairs in this cable are only two and are comparatively more difficult to install. when installing, you must ensure that the metallic shield on both the ends is properly grounded.

Q. when do I need a shielded cable and which type do I need?

A. The main use of shielded cable is to strengthen the signal transmission via the cable and protect it from disturbances like crosstalk, Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference. This interference usually occurs when there are any kinks or crimps from the neighbouring structures. these cause the transmission of data to slowdown. Common sources causing the disturbances are large motors and generators, radio towers and high-voltage lighting fixtures.

Q. what is a crossover cable?

A. a crossover cable, also known as cross wired cable, is a network cable that is used for the connection of two network devices without the need of any hub or switch. these cables are terminated distinctively on one of its ends with pairs switched green and orange. This cable also enables you to directly access the hardware on the same network.

Q. what is a solid cable?

A. within the jacket of a solid cable, also known as one strand cable, there’s only one solid piece of copper wire. Solid cables give mechanical ruggedness and because it’s a single conductor, this cable can be used for structured wiring inside a building. In an insulation displacement connector, it’s easier to place solid cables.

Q. what is a stranded cable?

A. a stranded cable consists of numerous thin copper wires bundled within a jacket. each one of these thin strands within the cable can be bent and flexed conveniently. Owing to their flexibility, these cables are mainly to make patch cables that can easily be plugged, unplugged and installed. even if the stranded cables are twisted frequently, these neither corrupt nor affect the signal strength.

Q. Which type do I need, solid or stranded?

A. though both the cables, solid and stranded have the same signal strengths, stranded cables are considered better for short lengths due to their flexibility. On the other hand, solid cables are much better for long cable runs.

Q. what is the maximum length?

A. The maximum recommended length for networking cables is 330ft (100m) which is based upon the solid cable as it’s the preferred choice for maximum length. Always make it a point to use repeaters at the length of patch cables. The distance between two of the patch cords should be 30ft (8m). another thing you have to pay heed to is the bending of the cables. Since these are rated with the least bending capacities, the signals are slowed down in case of a severe bending.

Q. what is RJ45?

A. just like the lines on the road control the traffic, connectors, at the end of cables, line up the wires in physical locations inside themselves. In network installation, RJ45 connectors are used specifically for connecting the Ethernet devices.
