-nokia Accessories - Reviews: Vaja Premium Leather Sleeve for iPad 2/iPad (3rd-Gen) - (5/18/2012)

Leather aside, there’s very little to distinguish this sleeve from many others that are available at lower prices; the design depends on the leather to really make an impact, which it can with the right colors. Unlike rivals, Vaja advertises the sleeve as supporting iPads protected by Smart Covers as well as bare devices, although we found that inserting a covered iPad takes a little bit more work: the Smart Cover tends to bunch up and pull away from the tablet unless it’s held just so as it’s being inserted. If the Sleeve was something more than two leather halves sewn together, but rather was designed with fully reinforced edges, this would likely not be an issue, and it would also eliminate the bulging effect that we saw. For the sky-high price, a case like this needs more than just intriguing materials, and as such, we can’t readily recommend Premium Leather Sleeve over the multitude of alternatives. Only consider it if you’re absolutely in love with colored leathers and willing to pay a lot of cash to wrap your iPad in them part of the time.

Laptop Accessories – Choosing a Wireless Mouse

Although laptops are facing some fierce competition with tablet devices, the laptop is a device that is still needed and desired by many techies and professionals. many newer model laptops come equipped with features such as bluetooth. one accessory most laptop users can not do without is the mouse. Touch pads are of great use, but the mouse is the input device that will allow you to play games and use many programs with precision and control not offered by your built-in touch pad.

Wireless input devices such as mice offers more flexibility over your wired mouse because you don’t have to get frustrated with the wire getting in your way or entangled with items or your desk. Wrapping up the mouse cord can be another annoying feature of these wired mice. for those dedicated users of technology who are using a late-model laptop, you can still enjoy the use of a mouse without the wires. in my experience, I prefer Logitech or Kensington wireless mice. when choosing to go without the wires on a mouse, I would avoid using those mice defined as micro. These small devices can be somewhat frustrating to use if you have medium to large size hands, If your hands are small or the device is for a child, then a micro wireless mouse would make sense.

Many vendors have wireless mice with micro receivers, these are a great investment because these small receivers will fit nearly flush with side of the laptop while plugged into the USB port. you can leave these micro receivers plugged into your laptop and your wireless mouse will reconnect when your laptop is powered on. when choosing your new wireless mouse for your new or older model laptop, I would recommend choosing a device that offers the micro receiver.

Remember to select a wireless mouse that feels comfortable in your hands and one that will shut off automatically when not in use for an extended period.

Family praying for missing Fox movie executive’s return

On May 1, Gavin Smith disappeared.

After returning from a Las Vegas conference, the longtime 20th Century Fox executive -– who distributed such hits as “Titanic” and “Avatar” — inexplicably missed a school pick-up for his teenage son.

His Mercedes is missing along with him. his family was unable to locate him either through his cellphone or credit card billings.

That was May 1. since then, authorities and his family have been unable to locate him. This week, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department intensified their search, but detectives said they have no solid leads.

“We’re praying and hoping for the best,” Smith’s eldest son, Evan, said on Thursday. “It’s all in God’s hands.”

Authorities stressed that they have no evidence of foul play.

“It’s an adult missing persons case, not a homicide,” said Sheriff’s  Lt. Wes Sutton. “At this point, there’s nothing criminal [related] to his disappearance.”

Sutton said information on Smith has been distributed within the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department and that his vehicle information has been included in a missing vehicle database should another police agency find it.

In addition, sheriff’s officials have distributed fliers and embarked on a campaign through the media to reach out to the public for help.

“We’re getting lots of tips,” Sutton said, but detectives still don’t have any firm sense of what happened.

In media interviews this week, Smith’s family has provided some insight into the circumstances leading up the night he vanished. Gavin Smith was staying with a friend near Ventura County’s Oak Park neighborhood but drove away in his Mercedes between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. without telling anyone — another puzzling move, his family said.

Wearing a pair of purple athletic pants belonging to one of his sons, Smith left behind his cellphone charger, shaving kit and other items.

“That’s what he was wearing, you know?” Evan Smith told “Good Morning America” in an interview. “It doesn’t sound like he was going anywhere.”

Smith’s family said he hasn’t been to his Calabasas office since he went missing. they declined to elaborate why he was staying with the friend instead of their home in West Hills, but Evan Smith tweeted last month that his father had left the family.

“Thoughts and prayers out to my amazing Mom and bros plz,” the USC basketball player wrote in an April 14 message. “My dad decided to leave the family last nite. Real family sticks together.”

The tweet has since been deleted, but Evan Smith told E! News his parents were not separated.“They were just going through normal stuff couples go through,” he said.

Evan Smith told the Times his family was “devastated” by his father’s disappearance but was “staying strong.” They’ve created a website, findgavinsmith.com, to help coordinate search efforts.

Smith is 6-foot-6, weighs 210 pounds, has gray hair streaked with blond and a goatee. He was last seen in his black 2000 Mercedes 420-E with California license plate 6EKT044.

Investigators ask anyone with information to call (323) 890-5500.

-nokia Accessories - New phones and services herald start of CTIA - (5/13/2012)

Weelcome to CTIA.

(Credit:Lynn La/CNET)

On a sultry new Orleans afternoon today, AT&T took over a century-old Garden District mansion to open the 2012 CTIA. Yes, the annual wireless confab doesn’t formally open until tomorrow morning, but the news already is coming fast and furious. and though I don’t arrive in the big Easy until tomorrow either, a big CNET team is on the ground by the Mississippi. here are the highlights of what they saw today.

New phones!Though trade shows like CTIA are about much more than hardware, it’s the hardware that excites the most. if you read Jessica Dolcourt’s preview from last week, you’ll know that the 2012 show promises to deliver fewer new phones than in past years. That may still be true, but I was glad to see that we got two new handsets today.

First up is the HTC Droid incredible 4G. After a few weeks of rumors, Verizon Wireless and HTC finally spilled the details early this morning in a press release. The handset runsAndroid 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and has an 8-megapixel camera, Beats Audio integration, HTC’s Sense 4 software, a 4-inch Super LCD qHD screen, a dual-core Snapdragon S4, a 17,000mAh battery, and a microSD card slot.

Big Red says it will release the Droid incredible 4G in the coming weeks. we don’t know pricing yet, but Maggie Reardon is guessing it will cost $199 with a two-year contract. Oh, and in its press release, HTC also let it slip that it would roll out the HTC One V to U.S. carriers this summer. Here’s a closer look at the incredible 4G from Jessica.

AT&T announced its own new device in the budget-minded Samsung Focus 2. TheWindows Phone 7 device supports the carrier’s 4G LTE network and comes with a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, a 5-megapixel camera, and a front-facing VGA camera. The Focus 2 will go on sale May 20 for $49.99 with a two-year service agreement. to see the device up close and personal, check out this hands-on from Jessica and Lynn La.

AT&T's Digital Life

(Credit:Lynn La/CNET)

AT&T inside your homeDon’t worry, AT&T reps won’t be coming over for a visit (that is, unless you want them to), but the carrier is developing new technology designed to let you control almost everything in your home right from your smartphone ortablet. From locking your doors, to lowering your window blinds, to adjusting your thermostat and lights, you’ll need only a compatible device and an Internet connection.

Jessica has a hands-on with the service and Seth Rosenblatt has a photo tour of AT&T’s connected house. also, Roger Cheng chats up an AT&T exec about the connected devices that could come.

Mobile payments and moreMaster Card announced it would enter the mobile payments game with its own digital wallet service called PayPass Wallet Services. Users will be able to store all of their cards and MasterCard will distribute developer tools to allow other digital wallets to work with its network.

Meanwhile, Clarion unveiled a new product for connected-car fans with its next Gate. The 7-inch screen connects to your iPhone 4 or 4S and acts like a remote interface for certain features. You can’t play Angry Birds on the road (thankfully), but you can make hands-free calls via Bluetooth and use apps like GPS navigation, Internet radio, social networking, and voice control/text readout.

So that’s it for the first day of CTIA news. As I mentioned, the show really begins tomorrow, so check back all week for full coverage from CNET.

-nokia Accessories - MBBS student gets no relief in cheating case - (5/13/2012)

A final year MBBS student, who allegedly adopted ‘Vasool Raja MBBS style’ in copying through mobile phones and bluetooth accessories inside the examination hall, was denied relief with the Madras high court dismissing his petition seeking a direction to the authorities to publish his final year results.

Justice K. Chandru said according to Narmadha Sampath, counsel for Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, petitioner S. Arif Mohammed appeared for the final year MBBS part II examination held in February 2012.

However, when he wrote the examination, an anonymous call was received informing authorities that the students of Stanley Medical College were indulging in copying through mobile phones and bluetooth.

One student from Stanley Medical College submitted the list containing the names of 10 students who have indulged in copying, which included the name of the petitioner.

The student, who gave the complaint, also handed over the materials used for copying. Complaints were also received from the candidate who submitted the materials used for copying.

The university immediately convened a meeting of the examination disciplinary committee for conducting a detailed enquiry.

Explanation was also called for from the dean of Stanley Medical College. the varsity has also approached the cyber crime police for helping them in the probe.

The final outcome of the enquiry of the committee was still awaited. A request was also made to the commissioner of police for helping them in this regard.

In view of all this, the results of 10 candidates, including the petitioner, was withheld while those of others were published.

To prevent malpractice in theory examinations, the university has given directions to fix mobile phone jammers and scan candidates with metal detectors before they enter the examination halls.

“In the light of the stand taken by the university, the prayer in the petition cannot be countenanced,” the judge said.

-nokia Accessories - My Horrible Journey To Buy An iPad From Verizon - (5/11/2012)

So over a week ago I decided I wanted to sell my MacBook Air and purchase an iPad. I went through the chore of selling the Air and last Thursday I had the money in hand and started my trek of finding the right iPad for me. Obviously I was going to choose the newer iPad because that retina display is needed for me to live a happy life. then it was the choice of WiFi or LTE capable, which I opted to go with LTE just so I could have the option when I needed a signal and I wasn’t near WiFi.

Now, I live in Portland, OR and have my iPhone on AT&T’s network, and it gets pummeled by all the hipsters trolling the streets. Since I knew how AT&T coverage was in the area, I decided to give Verizon a chance, as from the people I’ve talked to, gets decent coverage in the great PDX Metro area. So I knew what I wanted now I just had to get that sexy little gadget in my hands. I started off calling all 3 of my local Apple Stores — with no luck. then I made my way into all of the big-box retailers which didn’t yield my sweaty little hands an iPad, either.

My last option was all of the Verizon Wireless retailers in the area, besides the normal retail outlets we had Go Wireless Verizon Authorized dealer whatever you want to call it locations. there are upwards of 50 of these within a 50 mile radius. I had a way higher chance of getting myself a new iPad… or so I thought.

The first Verizon location I called was the main branch Downtown Portland, they were horribly unfriendly and told me that every location in Portland was sold out. Discouraged, I set out to order myself one from Apple’s website and wait the 1-2 weeks delivery time. I decided I wouldn’t give up that easily and so I lit a fire under my arse and started calling every other Verizon retailer in the area… the next person I spoke with said they had a white 32gb iPad in stock. I told the sales rep, Justin, that I wasn’t interested in the white model and wanted the black version. he told me to come on in and we’ll get it ordered. Upon my arrival he had a 16gb black version and a 32gb white for me to test out to see if black was the right fit. after gabbing about our children’s sports games and what not, I told him that I wanted to go black, and that I would never go back.

So we set up to order the device and he asked if I had service with them. I said I don’t so he began to take my ID as well as SSN to get me signed up with a data plan and get my iPad ordered. I told Justin that I didn’t want a plan and was going to do the pay-as-you-go option. he said that doesn’t exist and that $30 for a 2gb plan was my cheapest option, plus $35 activation fee. I informed him that he wasn’t entirely accurate and that there is other options. he argued with me for a few minutes, and as I was about to walk out of the door, his co-worker explained that they can sell it as an accessory to get it to me without activation and a data plan. I rejoiced, and we set out to get it ordered.

After a few keyboard clicks he informed me that wasn’t an option. To order the device I had to sign up for a data plan. he attempted to tender out the white model he had on hand, which let him do it as an accessory, but to order the iPad, that wasn’t an option. he took my number and said he would call if it came in. So after I finished watching both of my sons play soccer, I set out on another phone journey to find me an iPad locally. I called a Verizon store that said they will only sell them with a data plan, on hand or order. I called another place that said they don’t have any, and to order from the website.

After going through another 10 locations, getting slightly different answers each time, I settled upon the Verizon retailer that is located next door to the place I work. I ran over there today on my lunch break and asked the rep if I could get order an iPad without getting a data plan. he said yes, and double checked to see if there was any stock. When the result was order the device only, I was thrilled when he said by the end of the week. he asked for my cell number and last four digits of my SSN. When I told him I didn’t have an account with Verizon he said that he can’t sell me an iPad without being a Verizon Wireless customer. So I walked out of the 5th Verizon Wireless retail location empty handed – minus the $729 literally burning a hole in my pocket.

I spoke – in person as well as by phone – to around 20 different Verizon representatives, and almost each time was told a slightly different variation of what they could do for me. the only common denominator is that Verizon does not need or want my money.

Why do I have to be a customer to purchase an iPad. the device does not require a data plan to use. you can purchase data packages straight from the device itself. It can function without 4G signals and isn’t subsidized through Verizon. if I was getting it for $299 or so, I would expect to be forced to pay monthly. This isn’t the case with the iPad.

So now I am forced to wait 1-2 weeks to get a device from either Apple or best Buy as Verizon is too good to help me out and is forcing me into having a constant cellular signal on the device.

Thank you, Verizon. Thanks for representing excellent customer service and trying to take care of customers. I wasn’t a Verizon cellular subscriber to begin with, and this is really showing me the level of service I would receive if I was. I shouldn’t get a different answer with every person I talk to. AT&T gets a bad rap, but I have never received this level of customer service in 10 years of loyal subscription.

I am considering not getting a Verizon iPad and might suffer through the slow speeds of AT&T just to not support a company that isn’t appreciative of my hard earned $729.

-nokia Accessories - Is That $99 Xbox 360/Kinect Bundle Really A Good Deal? - (5/11/2012)

It turns out that the rumors were true, and Microsoft has indeed released a $99 Xbox 360 console and Kinect bundle tied to a two-year Xbox LIVE subscription. It’s seems like an awesome deal. After all, you get to walk away with a brand new Xbox 360 and Kinect having only put down $99.

What could possibly go wrong?

Well, there are a number of things you should be aware of before signing on the dotted line.

The first thing that grabbed my attention while scanning the terms and conditions document for the Xbox 360 console bundle is that there’s no mention of extended warranty being part of the agreement – something which had initially been rumored. This means that Microsoft’s standard warranty applies to the console and Kinect hardware. This means you get one year of cover for the console, and 90 days cover for any accessories.

In real terms, this means is that if your console dies after a year, it will have lived as long as Microsoft expected it to. It also means that you’re lumbered with having to pay for another 12 months of Xbox LIVE subscription, or pay the early termination fee — which after a year would still be $132.

Another thing to bear in mind is that you need to keep your Xbox LIVE membership in good standing for the entire duration of the subscription. let me draw your attention to the conditions that can trigger the early termination fee. One in particular I’ve highlighted in bold.

10.  EARLY TERMINATION FEES.

An Early Termination Fee (“ETF”) is a charge made to your credit card if any of the following occur:

- If you do not return your Console Bundle during the 30 day Return Period, and you cancel your Subscription before the two year term ends; – If you fail to provide an on time, full Subscription payment and we are required to cancel your Subscription; or. – If you violate the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use, resulting in termination of your Xbox LIVE membership.

This means that if, for any reason, your Xbox LIVE membership is terminated, the early termination fee becomes payable immediately. most people think that as long as they play nicely with other players and don’t mod their console, their account is safe. While this is true most of the time, it’s not always the case. I’ve come across countless tales of woe from gamers who say their Xbox LIVE account was either cancelled for not good reason, or cancelled accidentally. And in my experience of helping people in such situations, it can be really difficult to get a cancelled Xbox LIVE account reinstated.

Another factor to consider is that you’re entering into a two-year contract over technology that’s already six and a half years old. By the time you’ll done paying for it, your gaming platform will be eight and a half years old.

Not only do you have to think about the age of the platform, but with rumors of an update starting to take shape, it’s quite possible that the new Xbox 720 — or whatever it ends up being called — could be a year or so away. While you shouldn’t base your purchasing decisions on rumors and speculation, it’s certainly something worth considering.

-nokia Accessories - The Science of Web Design: Give Users Options, But Not Too Many - (5/9/2012)

How much is too much, when it comes to self-expression and customizing an interactive web portal or online community? It’s a delicate balance that depends on avoiding decision fatigue, while allowing cosmetic changes and abilities to express individual thoughts and ideas, according to new research from Penn State.

Gadgets and Blogging Platform for Heightened Interactivity

Getting users involved in a web community is one of the great challenges of the Internet. How do you not only get users to come to the site, but sit down, make themselves comfortable, and then keep coming back for more? Dr. Shyam Sundar, founding director of the Media Effects Research Lab at Penn State University, has isolated several potential offerings that can increase interactivity and user enthusiasm for a website, web portal, or online community.

In research presented today at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, Dr. Sundar demonstrated that a combination of gadgets, cosmetic personalization (changing colors, fonts, and other methods of making a page unique between users) and blogging is the optimum combination for user interactivity.

Why is this Research important?

For a Web Admin, this research is a window into the psyche of the casual browser, and offers an opportunity to increase interaction and interest in a website. as Dr. Sundar told Decoded Science, it also “highlights the need to view interactive tools as vehicles of self-expression, rather than simply as a back-and-forth exchange of information between the user and the system.”

He continues, saying that, “cosmetic customization features on modern media devices (e.g. face-plates on cell phones or background images on our desktop screens) may seem trivial, but our research shows that users have much more positive attitudes towards interfaces that they decorate, compared to those that they don’t. more importantly, cosmetically customizing one’s interface serves to enhance user’s engagement with the content in that interface, especially when the interface offers ongoing opportunities for self-expression, such as active blogging.”

“in fact, we found that active blogging (i.e., personal journaling) leads to more positive attitudes toward the portal than filter blogging (i/e forwarding content prepared by others) and greater absorption with the  content and greater intention to use the portal in the future.”

Does that mean a website should devote itself to creating a blogging platform for users? not quite – according to Dr. Sundar, even “Offering users a simple text field can be profoundly important for self-expression – goes to show why Twitter and status-update function in Facebook are so successful.”
