NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride)

Mobile Phone Batteries - New electrode material could lead to powerful rechargeable sodium batteries - (5/5/2012)

A new electrode material could help make lightweight, powerful rechargeable sodium batteries to replace lithium-ion batteries used in electronics and some electric vehicles. the material contains widely available iron, instead of the nickel and cobalt commonly used in these electrodes, and enables a similar energy density to electrodes in lithium batteries.

Sodium is an attractive candidate to replace lithium in batteries because it’s cheaper and widely available around the world. But building a sodium battery requires redesigning battery technology to accommodate the chemical reactivity and larger size of sodium atoms.

A rechargeable battery, whether lithium or sodium, contains two electrodes, the anode and the cathode. When a battery with an anode made from sodium metal discharges, electrons flow from that electrode to the other. the anode sloughs off positively charged sodium ions, which travel over to the cathode and wiggle inside the material to balance the extra negative charges coming in through the circuit.

When the battery is charged, this process is reversed: electrons flow out of the cathode, releasing the sodium ions inside. these ions float over to the other electrode, gain an electron, and replace the atoms lost during discharging.

The energy density of a battery depends on the amount of charged ions that the electrode can hold as well as the amount of energy released by each electron. the greater the energy density, the smaller a powerful battery can be.

Lithium batteries pack more of an electrical punch than sodium batteries because lithium atoms naturally release more energy when losing an electron than sodium does. So, for sodium batteries to reach energy densities similar to lithium ones, the positive electrode in the sodium battery has to hold more ions. and ideally, the ion-sized spaces in the electrode do not change size during the electron exchange, so that sodium ions can easily squeeze in and out as the battery charges and discharges.

To make this new electrode material, Shinichi Komaba, of Tokyo University of Science and his colleagues ground together iron oxide, sodium oxide, and manganese oxide. They squished the powder into a pellet and heated it to 900°C for 12 hours. This created a material with the formula Na2/3[Fe1/2Mn1/2]O2.

Then the researchers made a battery using this new material as the positive electrode and sodium metal as the negative electrode. the capacity of the new material, which reflects how much charge one gram of electrode material can store, was 190 milliAmp-hours/gram, with an average voltage of 2.75 V. the capacity decreases over 30 charging cycles, meaning that the battery held less energy each time it was recharged.

the energy density of this material was estimated to be about 520 mWhr/g, similar to the energy density of LiFePO4 and about 80 mWhr/g higher than LiMn2O4 cathodes. Using carbon or titanium dioxide for negative electrode, instead of sodium, might allow the researchers to build a rechargeable battery that puts out three volts of power (the amount in two AA batteries).

Another recently published material using layered vanadium pentoxide as the positive electrode in a rechargeable sodium battery has a higher capacity and energy density than this material. it also maintains its capacity for 200 charging cycles.

The new material is unique because it contains cheap iron, says chemist Christopher Johnson, of Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, who helped develop the vanadium-containing material. Since sodium battery technology is still new, it’s encouraging to see materials with energy densities similar to current lithium batteries, he says. “Who knows where we’ll be in 10 years?”

But using a cheaper material for the positive electrode does not necessarily reduce the overall cost of a battery, says Jay Whitacre, of Carnegie Mellon University. Dropping the total cost requires considering the other components, like electrolyte and anode, in the battery too. and a battery made with this new material does not use anything different than a standard lithium-ion battery, he says.

Mobile Phone Batteries - Rash of rescues prompts Larimer County to offer hiker safety tips - (5/2/2012)

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — two hikers from California were rescued from the Crags area of Twin Sisters outiside Rocky Mountain National Park this weekend. it was the third time in two weeks emergency personnel responded to find lost hikers in Larimer County.

Tens of thousands of people head into the back country in Larimer County each year and some of the get into situations which require emergency workers to help with search, rescue or carry-out.

“many of these missions could have been avoided had hikers used some common sense and a little preparation,” says Larimer County Sheriff’s Office spokesman John Schulz.

The sheriff’s office offers the following hiker safety suggestions:

Tell someone where you’re going, your general route and when you intend to return. Stick to your time frame or you may find yourself the object of a search the next day, and don’t separate from your hiking companions unless you have an emergency.  If you change your plans at the last minute, leave a note in your car on the driver’s side dashboard with the new plans.

Carry matches, first aid kit, a flashlight with fresh batteries and clothes warm enough to wear if you have to spend the night.   Be sure to have a whistle or other noise-making device you could use to help rescuers locate you if needed.

Have rain gear with you on every hike.  Colorado weather can change quickly.  When your clothes are soaking wet, hypothermia is a danger even in the summer and rain parkas can provide extra warmth. The same goes for ponchos, which can also provide rudimentary shelter.  Carry an extra jacket and gear.  Dress appropriately, the weather where you are hiking to may be radically different than where you start.

Clothing made from cotton will actually make you colder if it gets wet.  Wool or fleece insulates even when wet. bright clothing also helps searchers and aircraft see you better and at greater distances.

Carry a map and compass and don’t be lulled into a sense of security by merely carrying them as a magic talisman. You also need to know how to use them. If you’re unsure, get a book on the subject of “orienteering.” If you have a GPS unit, practice its proper use and bring it with you.  Recognize that there may be times when the GPS, like the cell phone, will not work on our mountain trails.

Don’t depend on a cell phone to send a plea for assistance if you get into trouble, another very good reason to avoid going soloMake sure your cell phone is fully charged if you take it.  many cell/smart phone mapping programs do not work if you don’t have cell service.

“Short cuts” can easily end up costing you time and energy to find your trail again and serve to create erosion on switch-backed mountain trails. Please avoid them.

Don’t trust the water. Even our clear mountain streams can and do contain Giardia, causing diarrhea, cramps and nausea. Use a filter pump (available from most outdoor shops), boil your water for at least five minutes or have fresh chemical tablets for killing the bugs.

“Take only pictures — leave only footprints.” Take out what you brought in and do the land and all of us a favor by taking out other people’s trash, too. Every little bit helps.

What to do if you are lost –  Stop walking! find a tree to hug. Draw attention to yourself any safe way possible. Put on your brightest clothing. Yell or whistle if you hear your name called or another whistle.

Keep calm! Pull out your survival gear, build a fire if necessary, and wait.  If you have a cell phone, and can find a cell signal, call 911. Do not waste batteries calling friends and family.

NOKIA was once king of the mobiles, ruling the industry with its range of (then) cutting-edge GSM phones.

If you weren’t playing Nokia games "Snake" and "Space Impact" then you had not bought the right mobile.

Then came the smartphone era which began Nokia’s slide although it still dominated thanks to huge sales in countries such as India.

The Finnish company hopes to turn around its fortunes with a new range of smartphones powered by the Windows Phone 7 operating system.

Based on Nokia’s flagship WP7 mobile, the Lumia 800, it has a very good chance of taking the fight to Apple and mobiles running Android.

You can tell Nokia has made a special effort to impress and that experience begins the moment you slide open the recycled material box.

The Lumia 800 has a simple, elegant design – the screen is the focus of your attention yet the polycarbonate matte finish case is smooth to the touch and available in vibrant colours that match the "mood" hues of the WP7 display.

Turn the phone on and be further impressed – the slightly curved Corning Gorilla Glass screen sits flush with the phone case and displays rich colours and reasonably sharp text.

Up close there appears to be a slight diffusion filter effect – you will see black dots scattered across the screen but these are only visible if you look closely and won’t affect your appreciation for the screen.

There is an eight megapixel dual LED flash camera on board which takes reasonable photos – good enough for you to print a decent 10x15cm photo.

The Xbox Live games tested on the handset run smoothly and the phone handled a variety of tasks without hesitation.

One great feature is the flip-up charging port lid on top of the phone.

Tap the left side of the door and it will seesaw open so you can insert the charger connection.

While it is open, you can slide the panel next to it to release the microSIM card holder.

One possible annoyance of this phone is the placement of the on/off button – it is on the right edge of the handset and you might occasionally bump it if your right thumb tends to fidget while you are talking.

The Nokia Lumia 800 costs $699 outright.

Mobile Phone Batteries - How former Microsoft tech chief Nathan Myhrvold could have created the iPhone - (4/30/2012)

Nathan Myhrvold is back in the national spotlight again, but in a very different way this time.

A cover story in Men’s Journal, called “How a Geek Grills a Burger,” casts the former Microsoft chief technology officer as a “mad scientist” living out a “nerd fantasy.”

He has a bestselling six-volume cookbook, he studied astrophysics with Stephen Hawking, and his giant Tyrannasaurus rex skeleton has turned his waterfront home into a tourist attraction.

And yes, by the way, he tried to convince Microsoft to make the iPhone, basically, more than two decades ago. From the piece …

In 1991, Myhrvold predicted the emergence of the iPhone down to the smallest detail, describing a “digital wallet” that would consolidate all personal communication — telephone, schedule manager, notepad, contacts, and a library of music and books, all in one. it would record and archive everything you asked it to, he surmised. “The cost will not be very high,” he wrote. “It is pretty easy to imagine a $400 to $1,000 retail price.” Microsoft, however, was too cost conscious and risk averse to execute Myhrvold’s vision. “Hey, it was better than predicting the wrong thing,” Myhrvold says now.

Taken in its entirety, it’s very different picture of Myhrvold than the one painted last year in the This American Life/Planet Money piece, “When Patents Attack.” the radio investigation likened the approach of Myhrvold’s Intellectual Ventures  patent holding company to a “mafia-style shakedown.”

The Men’s Journal piece leaves a different impression overall, portraying Myhrvold more as geeky genius than as a patent troll. Myhrvold participated in the story, apparently enthusiastically — even sticking a half-lemon in his mouth for one goofy pic.

The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department and Council Member Mike Sullivan are hosting a Mobile BOPA (Batteries, Oil, Latex Paint and Antifreeze) collection on Saturday, April 28, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., at the Kingwood Metro Park and Ride located at 3210 W. Lake Houston Parkway.

All residents disposing of material must present a driver’s license and water bill as proof of City of Houston residency.

Only the following items WILL be accepted:

Rechargeable batteries

used motor and cooking oil (5 gal limit/each)

latex paint (10 gal limit)

antifreeze (5 gal limit)

scrap metal and large appliances (with freon removed), such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners.
