Heifers 20mo plus met another tremendous trade with several lots over £1000 and Nancy Rae-Smith taking top honours with 20mo Limousin heifers to £1240 and others from Tom Sheppard at £1090. Simmentals sold well to £1060 from FI Baker. Bullers in demand and selling to an amazing trade with forward types over £900 and longer term types from £700 to £850. many more wanted to take advantage of this trade. Angus (193): many more Angus for this week’s sale and plenty of potential purchasers. Generally trade moving forward and the overall quality was much improved on some weeks. many younger types 8-12mo all wanted with quite amazing prices. Best young steers many times over £850 with top sport at £950. Heifers 8-10mo regularly £650-£700 and more could have been easily sold. 10mo steers peaked at £950 from Kellaway & Prideaux, Affpuddle, and 12mo heifers reached £658 from GR Hemmens, Westbury. Stronger Angus steers 18-24mo seeing tremendous competitive bidding and many over £1000 with strongest steers to £1240 on 10 occasions. Forward heifers all easily sold through the day. Bulling types in good demand £750-£850. Finishing heifers with flesh always over £850 and all the more forward sorts over £1000 to £1060. Hereford (107): as with the other traditional breeds, a very good show was on offer and everyone very keen. Plenty of good shaped steers with some grand sorts from G White all out of his British Friesian cows. Prices were excellent and generally £750 to £850. 10mo steers often over £700 and more wanted. 10mo Hereford steers to £770 from HJ Trevett & Son, Dorchester, and heifers to £735 (10mo) from PA & RJ Lucas, Wells. Medium grazers regularly over £800 to £930 and forward steers from £1000 to top at a tremendous £1300 from AM Catley-Day. More Hereford heifers on offer met a strong demand and vendors rewarded for selling early. Young 7mo dairy bred heifers over £400 with quality types with potential to £555. Medium framed bullers from £615 to £735 and forward types ready to bull from £828 to £895 from FI Baker, and the best to £935 from AM Catley-Day, Axbridge. Friesian (110): What a trade from the large company of buyers forward with a good selection of all ages on offer. Yearlings regularly over £500 and medium grazers from £520 to £675. larger framed lean types an amazing trade from £748 to £900 and deeper bodies types from £1000 to £1070 and best to £1182 from Paul Hurd, Hill Deverill.
Dairy cattle (76) Auctioneer Derek Biss – Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a very large entry of milkers that generally lacked the overall quality of previous weeks. the best which were in short supply still sold very well to a top of £2200 for a Pedigree heifer from Messrs B Rose & Son of Sturminster Newton. non pedigree heifers to £2140 and £2000 for Messrs ET Summerfield & Son of Oxford; £2100 for Nick Goss, Devizes; £2020 Messrs J & H Snook; £2020 and £1940 for mr JC Palmer, Chumleigh and £2000 for mr A Witcombe. Cows to £1680 mr D Tottle and £1640 mr J Snook. the trade proved much more difficult compared to previous weeks for 2nd quality cows and heifers, probably reflecting the effects of the continued dry weather and the payment of Lady Day rent cheques. An electric calf trade, when 2 week old Holstein Friesians sold to £380 x 3 for Messrs DE & WM Headon, Barnstaple. £340 x 2 mr RJ Shere, who also had Jersey calves to £170 and Brown Swiss x calves at £190.

Poultry (387) Auctioneers Andy Clements and Henry Brice – Greenslade Taylor Hunt report the following poultry trades:- A top quality entry of 387 met a flying trade. the unusual entry of a pair of Emus consigned by mr Dorrington, Torrington took the top price at £255. 15 cages sold for over £50.
TB restricted cattle (249) Auctioneers Trevor Rowland and Mark Northcott – fat Cattle (47): One of the best runs of finished cattle seen in our regular TB Restricted Sales. Trade was fast and buyers were very keen for the well fleshed types. A tremendous run of under and over thirty month cattle from Maurice Emery and Family. These grand types commanded excellent prices. Their best Limousin steers peaked at 191p/kg and heifers at 182.5p/kg (£1231). Their Heavyweight Limousin steers achieved £1525 and Blues to £1517. A good run of well fed Continentals from CR Hartley & Son saw Simmental steers reach top spot at 199p/kg. many cattle over 180p/kg and many more would have sold to advantage. Cull Cows (16): the best fleshed meat cows in fierce demand and another firm trade resulted. An outstanding Bazadaise topped this section at 164p/kg (£1219) and Charolais at 150p/kg (£1076) from CM Howard & Sons, Devizes. A particular demand for the young lean/feeding types ranged 135-140p/kg. Plenty of Friesians 120-130p/kg. many more would have sold to advantage. Store Cattle (189): another good sized entry met a fast trade throughout. Angus cattle attracted particular interest. Smart 20-21mo steers achieved £1042, and Simmental heifers reached £895 from Mrs MR Meredith, Bath. Super summering types from the Gerring Partners, Warminster saw steers to £918 and heifers to £775. Herefords steers to £1005, and Charolais heifers to £825 from Knights Leaze Farming, Devizes. Cracking Blonde heifers to £980 from AJ Hunt, Claverham. A good consignment of 13mo Charolais steers from Steve Crossman, Warminster attracted keen interest to £778. the 80 Friesians presented for this sale met a huge demand. All buyers were keen for these types. the younger leaner types ranged £500 – £700. the best fleshed types over £800. another grand run of 40 from Martin and Louise Bodman, Devizes saw their Holsteins peak at £890 and numerous times over £850. Top spot at £918 for British Friesians again from the Gerring Partners.

Generally not the quality of last week’s and with a reduced overall standard of cattle on offer, the averages were a shade easier. the trade however was no less and if anything dearer. the early cattle met the best of the trade, which particularly displayed less belly waste. Top was Lot 6 at 215.5ppk, a light weight, very lean and shapely Limousin steer from Messrs HWC & JM Butler, who also sold other similar steers at 212.5ppk, 210.5ppk, 206ppk and 202.5ppk. A very smart Blonde (Lot 15) from mr MJ Chilcott raised a call of 213ppk. 212.5ppk was bid for Lot 18, another Limousin steer, this time from Messrs J & J Meaker & Son. good clean cattle from Messrs TV & E Wotton peaked at 212.5ppk for a Limousin steer. A reduced standard in terms of quality across the board, so the improvement was greater than the averages depict. A leaner meat Limousin from Messrs NM & CL Norris met a call of 149.5ppk. good meat sucklers generally around 140ppk.
