-caller Id - How to Get a Job Interview - (5/20/2012)

Having a hard time getting an interview? Follow these steps and your phone will start ringing off the hook from employers trying to get a hold of you

Step 1: Decide what type of work you want.

First, you must choose your field of expertise. Let’s assume that you’re just another recent college grad with a useless Liberal Arts degree. other than working in your uncle’s travel agency, you have no real work experience to speak of. No special skills. Does this mean you’re doomed to pick tomatoes with the rest of the Eastern European immigrants? Relax. this describes most of the English-speaking workforce in America. You can still get a job in an office doing customer service or, if you have no soul, sales.

Step 2: Decide which company you want to work for.

Next, you’re going to want to pick a company. You can find several job sites on the internet, specifically tailored to finding jobs in your region. Tel Aviv tends to have the most options, with Jerusalem ranking a close second. Some websites to scan are:

Craigslist.org Monster.com

When scanning the listings on these sites, make sure only to reply to the ones which have written about the job requirements. this serves two purposes:

You’ll know if the job fits your preference. taking the time to write what will be expected of you shows the company is serious about hiring someone.

Step 3: Copy and Paste is your friend.

Once you’ve found a listing that tickles your fancy, open your email account. in the To field, type your own email address. yes, you’re going to send this email to yourself as well. I’ll explain why in a moment. Next, copy and paste the email address given on the listing you want to apply to into the BCC field. BCC stands for Blind Carbon Copy. in non-nerd terms, this means that you are going to send a copy of this email to any address listed under that field. Do not send the email yet. Repeat the process with every job listing for which you want to apply. Some things to keep in mind: be careful not to copy and paste the same email address more than once. Many companies will often post several listings at the same time. Separate the email addresses in the BCC field with commas. Double-check that the email address is complete and not missing the.com or something else.

Step 4: Write your introductory cover letter.

Contrary to what you think, a good cover letter serves three purposes: it piques the interviewer’s curiousity about you. it makes them view your resume in a more favorable light. it causes the reader to want to meet you in person. Let me give a personal example. after my army service, I returned to America for a brief time. I applied to hundreds of companies and went on dozens of interviews. in my cover letter, I sometimes mentioned my service in the Israeli Defense Forces. What do you think happened? my phone rang off the hook with employers asking me to come in for an interview.

The secret to writing a good cover letter is to be unique. Take a moment and think about something that sets you apart from the dozens of cookie-cutter resumes any given employer receives daily. Is it your upbringing? Your ambition? a unique hobby of some sort? Sign your cover letter and remember to include your phone number in your signature. an entire article should be devoted to writing a successful introductory letter, so let’s leave it at that for now.

Step 5: Include your resume.

This seems like a no brainer, doesn’t it? just attach your resume as an MS Word document and hit send. WRONG these days, many employers are scared to receive viruses, spyware and similar software from hackers or their competitors. So play it safe by including a copy of your resume in the body of the email. if you’re copying and pasting from a word processor like Microsoft Word, make sure there are no errors as sometimes the copied content translates with errors into html. worst comes to worst, take ten minutes and retype it. Chances are you’ll notice one or two areas in need of tweaking anyway.

Once you’ve done that, feel free to send the email.

Apply at night or on a Saturday night. most employers check their email first thing in the morning and will call you early to set up an interview. Wake up early the next day or at least answer your cell phone when it rings. if the call wakes you up, answer anyway. out of politeness, the caller will ask if they should call you back. Say no. You will seem serious about the position. plan the interview for that day, if possible. Follow these steps and pretty soon you’ll have to fight them off with a stick

-caller Id - Changing the Number on Your Caller ID - (5/18/2012)

When Your Caller ID lies.

When it comes down to it, a lot of us who like to be left alone from annoying phone calls, love our caller id.

The caller identification on a phone allows for us to pick the phone up and see who is trying to get ahold of us. Sounds simple right? not so fast.

These days with technology improving and life around us being run by machines we tend to take for granted those things that we trust so much to tell us the truth. Our gas gauges tell us when we need to fill up, our thermostats automatically keep our homes and businesses warm and our phones tell us who is on the other end.

All of the above can be found true.but at the same time.what happens when things break?

  • If your gas gauge decides to get stuck, is it telling you when to fill up at the right time?
  • When the thermostat is on the fritz, does it keep you from sweating or freezing?
  • And now you have to ask yourself, is that name showing up on my caller id the right one?

With technology getting more and more advanced, the age of phone spoofing has risen. It takes on the form of your best friend but in reality can be your worst nightmare.

Nightmares uses can includes:

  • Unwanted calls from Telemarketers
  • People Pranking You
  • Someone who is stalking you
  • and more.

Practical and Effective uses:

  • Law Enforcement
  • Tracking and Tracing Skips
  • Checking up on Cheating Spouses
  • Keeping your privacy when calling out
  • Find out who just called you
  • and more.

This technology is done by being able to call a number on the spoof card and entering your pin. The software then asks you to choose a number you wish to display on the caller id. You can pick anything you want Then it asks you for the number to call. Once you have placed the number it automatically creates a three way call between you and the number you dialed creating the spoofed number via VOIP technology.

VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol – this technology can manipulate the number you see via the internet. this makes it very easy to change your caller id.

I change my caller id for practical uses because it allows me to stay private. Running a business I get a lot of people who find out my personal cell phone number and try to call me all the time for non-business reasons. I proceed to call the number back that has a changed identification that comes up to find out what the call is for.

So remember next time, when you go to pick up the phone.it may be lying to you.

-caller Id - Desktop Call Control Increases Worker Efficiency - (5/15/2012)

In nearly every business, the largest expense an overwhelming percentage of the time is the cost of manpower. People fuel business, so it’s no wonder that companies constantly strive to find ways to help their people be more efficient and more productive. With desktop call control, phone systems give companies an additional tool for increased efficiency.

What is desktop call control?

Desktop call control is the ability to handle your telephone calls from your PC. the era of having a telephone on your desk is being challenged by new technology, and it is quickly being embraced. We spend so much of our productive office time on our PC’s, and we often use headsets to handle calls, so wouldn’t it make sense that we handle calls from our PC as we move into the world of Voice Over IP?

Based on consumer demand, nearly all major manufacturers have made a form of desktop call control to help meet the expectations of today’s tech crazy employees and savvy employers. When an incoming call comes in, you can now answer the call by clicking a popup window on your PC with your mouse. This will either activate your speaker phone on your telephone desk-set or activate the call on your telephone headset. you can also choose to send the call to voicemail with the same click of the mouse. Simple. Easy. Efficient.

Want to transfer a call? no problem. With the click of a mouse you can select anyone in your office by name or extension. How about paging or conference calling functionality? It’s built in. How about calling someone in my Contacts? Done. Click the contact and have your phone system automatically dial the number. Some outlook integration is required with either IMAP or TAPI driver interfaces, but it is so simple to use that offices demand it.

Need to make a call from one of your last 50 incoming or outgoing calls? Choose a drop down box from a docked toolbar and select the number you want. Want to call a number from the web? Copy and paste the number into the toolbar and select dial. It’s done.

Desktop call control has made such a huge impact that some inbound call centers no longer even purchase handsets. They use IP Softphones and desktop call control to handle all of their incoming calls. if all of their representatives use USB headsets, what use do they have for the handset? From their toolbar they can place callers on hold, transfer, answer, send to voicemail, disconnect and conference. What more do they need?

The cost of the software is typically in the same range as buying lower end business telephone desk-sets, but often substantially less when purchased in volume. Price aside, businesses choose to buy desktop call control because of their increased efficiency with their manpower. take a look at this business case:

If a 30 person office all uses desk phones, and on average they are paid $10 per hour, how does one determine if this is a suitable solution? first one must identify activities performed where time is wasted. do you spend time looking for telephone numbers? do you look back and forth at your contacts in your CRM multiple times while trying to dial the number? do you look for the number you scribbled down from that last caller, but can’t find it among the mess on your desk? Does it take you more time than it should to get things done while you hold your phone against your ear and type with one hand or look for documents on your desk? do you have to ask people how to use the features on your phone to conference or try to transfer calls? all of those activities take TIME, wasted time, and there is a price associated with that time. What if having such an efficient application like desktop call control saved each employee an average of 5 minutes a day? What would that mean?

If the rate of pay is $10 an hour, the rate of pay per 5 minutes is 1/12 of that, or $0.83.

Multiply that by 30 employees and you get $25 a day.

$125 a week. $500 a month. $6,000 a year. (By the way, $500 is probably far more than a lease would be, so without looking at any additional productivity enhancing features of the new system, this system pays for itself on this alone)

$30,000 over five years projected savings.

What if you paid your employees much more than $10 an hour? Certainly you can see there is an incredible business case for use of desktop call control, as it can impact your unseen soft costs dramatically. As always, it is recommend you consult with your local telecommunications professional on all hardware and software applications.

-caller Id - THE SECOND HALF: Caller ID - (5/15/2012)

A few weeks ago I responded to a retiree who wrote “we seem to be struggling every month to get by. I have always been good with our money, able to stretch it. but lately, I just get so discouraged — I don’t see where I can cut back. What do you say to retirees who are having this trouble?”

Among the suggestions I made was for this understandably frustrated reader to investigate her phone bill to see if she and her husband might eliminate some services and therefore, save money each month. While I did not specify exactly which phone services might be unnecessary, another reader recently recommended maintaining Caller ID. I totally agree!

Here’s how it works. The phone rings, you check out the display and see who is calling. in that split second, you have the opportunity to answer, or not. It’s that simple.

I think the invention of Caller ID was a giant step forward for all of us, at any age. but as a benefit for boomers and seniors, it is worth every penny. It saves our sanity and it can save us money.

Caller ID has virtually eliminated ALL telemarketers from this household. for a while we were protected because we had an unlisted phone number. but eventually, these numbers somehow went semi-public and we joined millions who have their dinners interrupted by yet another pitch. then I registered with the Federal “do not Call” List yet again, some calls made it through. and then along came Caller ID. All it takes is a quick glance at the phone and life, as we want it, goes on. (Please don’t write to me and tell me just to ignore the phone during dinner. with three children and an 85-year-old mother who all live everywhere but here, this just isn’t in my DNA.)

It has made me wish we had had this feature when our children were teens — oh, how much more simple life would have been. during dinner (before cell phones), we would let the phone ring … and ring … and ring. Dinner was family time, no exceptions. of course, having the phone go off every five minutes hardly made for a peaceful meal. some nights, we’d simply turn off the ringer. (Note to today’s parents — tell your children to leave their cell phones off and in their bedrooms during dinner!)

Of course, there are always those times when you simply might not be in the mood to speak with someone, a choice I believe we all have. Sadly, my mother finds herself dealing with this exact situation, in the worst possible way. One of her deceased husband’s friends calls her virtually every day. The victim of dementia, this 93-year-old man, who lives in an assisted living facility, is somehow still able to use the phone. He’s often just lonely and only able to ramble on about the old days. but apparently, he can also be quite inappropriate and it makes my mother terribly uncomfortable. her solution? She simply avoids answering the phone. (I’m sure I don’t have to explain how difficult it is to live 800 miles away and not have her pick up. again, please, no emails or letters telling me to convince my mother about the merits of Caller ID. Been there, done that. and no, she won’t let me call the facility where he lives. that would be “rude.”)

But Caller ID has another excellent value — avoiding scam artists who target older Americans. Knowing that many of us in this age group are both polite and kind, and often single women, these criminals have the upper hand. This can result in good people losing their hard earned money, valuable personal information, such as social security numbers or banking information, and even their pride. from bogus fundraising operations to free travel packages and advanced-fee loan scams to “jailed grandchildren who need money” scams, sadly, there are simply too many telephone scams out there to mention here.

Caller ID allows you to see the number and then decide if you want to engage. Score one for private citizens, zero for the scam artist!

To be continued …

Telephone Investigations – Caller ID Spoof Cards

In this article, the second in a series about telephone investigations, we will examine Caller ID (CID) and caller ID spoof cards or faking the information that displays on a persons caller ID when you call them.

This is a tool that every single private investigator should have in their telephone investigative arsenal. Imagine the uses you can dream up for pretext calls in employment locates, skip tracing, vehicle repossessions and process service.

One of my favorite pretexts to use when trying to locate someone is the storage locker call. I call the subject or a friend or relative of the subject and I identify myself as the owner of a storage unit. I explain that a locker has been abandoned and there are personal items in the locker that I would rather not throw away. I describe a box with the skips name on it that contains old letters and pictures and cards. I tell them I’ll be happy to drop it in the mail I just want to be sure it gets to the right person.
This has been very effective at getting the current mailing address for hundreds of skips over the years. Now if the targets caller ID read Ace Storage it becomes even more effective. you can do that with a caller ID spoof card.

How about a pretext to locate a persons current place of employment. Maybe a caller ID spoofed call from the 2008 Election Poll asking if the target wants to particulate in a quick telephone poll. but first we need some background information such as age and occupation. As you can see the possibilities are endless.

Many Caller ID spoofing services will also offer related services such as call recording or voice changing technology. this can be extremely useful in documenting undercover investigations. some services even have a voice stress analysis feature that can be use d as a lie detection tool.

Caller ID spoofing can be used in conjunction with other telephone investigation tools such as reverse phone number database searches and telephone trap lines. Maybe you’ll call the target with a spoof card and leave a pretext message on their voice mail with instructions to call back a trap line. you can instruct the target to call back during normal business hours. when they call the trap line the automatic number identification feature will reveal their daytime work phone number. A reverse phone number search of that can reveal their place of employment or the location where you can effect service or process or a vehicle repossession.

As you can see from the examples shown above being able to fake a caller ID display can be a valuable tool to every private investigator. It is something that every investigator that takes his profession serious should have in their tool box.

-caller Id - How Does Caller ID Spoofing Work? - (5/7/2012)

Similar to e-mail spoofing, Caller ID spoofing is someone calling you with a fake number appearing on your Caller ID system. While there are many motivations for a person to use a spoof service, it can be very frustrating for the person receiving the call. No Caller ID or reverse phone lookup can help them. in the end, there is little that can be done, but there are some things to keep in mind.

First, it is important to know what kinds of people usually use spoofing. They range from the legitimate to the criminal. Law enforcement, collection agencies, and private businesses often use Caller ID spoofing to increase the likelihood of a person picking up the phone. in addition to these groups, prank callers are common users of Caller ID spoofing services for the simple purpose of covering up their crime or scaring the person answering the call even further. for example, many prank callers make threatening remarks while spoofing the person’s own number, making them think that the caller is calling from inside the house. you can’t use a reverse phone lookup to find out who’s calling if you don’t know information about them or their phone number.

Second, it is important to know the ways in which Caller ID spoofing is done. The most common way a call can be spoofed is by using an actual call spoofing service. Usually web-based, a spoofing service will ask for the source number, the destination number, and the number that the customer wants to appear on the Caller ID system. The spoof company will then generally call you and bridge your phone by connecting the call to the destination number. The second way to perform a Caller ID spoof is to use one of many programs that can be found on the Internet, but this can only be done if a person is using a broadband telephone service, also known as Voice-over Internet Protocol.

Though it is easy to spoof a call, you can often tell if a number has been spoofed by using a reverse phone lookup. with a reverse phone lookup and a combination of help from the local authorities, your telephone service provider and a company that can trace a phone number will help you determine who is spoofing you.

Caller ID Spoofing is Becoming More Popular Every Day – Should We Be Scared?

Although caller ID spoofing started out several years ago, it wasn’t as well known as it is today. still fairly unfamiliar with most people, it is becoming much more widely used. Supporters praise its use, others question its purpose.

For those new to the expression caller ID spoofing, it refers to the act of manipulating what is seen on a call display unit. when a user places a call, instead of blocking their phone number or revealing their real one, they can choose to have any number they wish show up.

Companies such as SpoofTel have been providing this service for years to a variety of individuals including celebrities and VIPs, professionals, law enforcement, and regular people who simply prefer to hide their number.

Celebrities and VIPs use it to disguise their number when calling even people they know, just in case someone’s phone was ever lost with their number listed in the caller ID. Regular people use it for responding to ads or returning calls to people they don’t know. in some cases, caller ID spoofing can be absolutely necessary.

A lot of people have questioned whether caller ID spoofing could be used illegally. the service itself is in fact perfectly legal and most caller ID spoofing providers work towards preventing malicious use of their service. most claim that they will even work with law enforcement when necessary. As a society that is, for a large part, working and living through the internet, we are cautious of some of what we come across. However, it seems that caller ID spoofing can do more for protecting our privacy than it can towards harming us in any way.
