Lafayette police are giving the all clear after a suspicious device caused them to close LaMont does Park and a portion of South Boulder Road for nearly two hours Saturday night.

Public safety officials from multiple agencies responded to reports of a suspicious device found in one of the restrooms at the park, located near the corner of East South Boulder Road and Saratoga Drive.

An 11-year-old boy found the strange device–later determined not to be a threat to public safety–in one of the restroom stalls and told his mother, who called police at 6:17 p.m., Lafayette police Sgt. Fred Palmer said. the device was described as small–about the size of a c-cell battery–and black, with wires hanging off of it. It was reportedly hot when the boy first touched it, Palmer said.

Lafayette police and the fire department responded to the scene and were later assisted by officers from the Boulder County Bomb Squad and the Colorado State Patrol, who helped shut down roads in the area. South Boulder Road between Saratoga and Robin Hood Street was closed while the investigation was taking place. A reverse 911 call was made to the nearby Peakview Apartments and residences on Excalibur Street warning people to avoid the area, Palmer said.

At about 7:54 p.m., Palmer said, bomb squad investigators determined the device was actually part of the electronic locking mechanism on the restroom door that is designed to automatically lock the facility after the park closes at 10 p.m. each night. It is unclear if it was tampered with or how it was removed from the door.

“There was never any threat of danger to anyone,” Palmer said. “The city parks and recreation department came down and dealt with the locks so they wouldn’t overheat or start a fire, so we’re in good shape.”

The scene was cleared and South Boulder Road was reopened by 8:20 p.m.

Nickel Metal Hydride Rechargeable Battery – Three Things You Need to Know About NiMH Battery

Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries are secondary electrochemical cell type that is similar to the nickel cadmium cell. However, its capacity is two to three times of that of a nickel cadmium one. These cells are quite great for replacing your non-rechargeable battery. furthermore, it is much safer than the nickel cadmium cell as it uses hydrogen absorbing alloys instead of cadmium for negative electrode.

There is significantly more freedom available when choosing a replacement battery in terms of amps. Increasing the amperage in the replacement battery will only increase the amount of time the battery can power the device before it needs to be recharged. for all intents and purposes, the only limiting factor in choosing a replacement battery in terms of amps is size, as batteries higher in amps are often larger in physical size.

Watts are less frequently used in classifying batteries. this term can be though of as simply the voltage of a battery multiplied by the amperage of the battery. although this term may be less helpful in determining the exact output of a replacement battery, the replacement battery chosen should be fairly close in wattage to the original battery.

Replacement batteries are often different from original batteries in terms of voltage and amperage due to the fact that they are often manufactured to be compatible with several different devices. while this may deter the average consumer from purchasing a replacement battery for fear of incompatibility, it is perfectly safe to use a replacement battery in any device as long as it meets or exceeds manufacturer standards. a difference in voltage is no reason to rule out a replacement battery, although the difference should be somewhat small. a difference in amperage will simply dictate the runtime of the battery, and can be altered according to the consumer’s needs. The only real limiting factor in this area is the physical size changes of replacement batteries with different amperage ratings.

Duracell Rechargeable Batteries – About Memory Effect

Memory effect is a term that is thrown around with talking about a rechargeable battery, but there are a lot of misconceptions around what memory effect is. Memory effect is where batteries aren’t able to hold as much charge as they once could.

When a user experiences less capacity in the battery than they once had, they believe that this is memory effect, which is not the case.

The most common reasons for batteries no longer outputting as they once did are the following:

1) Over-Charging: Charging aa rechargeable batteries, even the best rechargeable batteries, for too long will result in the peak voltage dropping off much more quickly than it once used to. it would appear to an end-user that the battery capacity had in fact decreased, however this is not the case. The is more common in high-drain consumer electronics such as handheld devices and digital cameras. The device is expecting to see the higher voltage, else it produces a low battery warning or similar. some electronic devices which are not high-drain may not even see any difference if the battery has a voltage drop. Over-charging is much more likely with cheap trickle (slow) chargers.

2) Age and Use: Shock horror, the more you use a rechargeable battery, the less effective it is due to chemical reactions it doesn’t matter whether you run Duracell rechargeable batteries, or a no-name brand, eventually they are all going to be less effective than they once were. The thing to look out for is the number of expected recharges you can get out of a battery. Many of the Duracell rechargeable batteries will give you around 1000 charges before their life ends. looking at the grand scheme of things, this is potentially one full charge every day for a few years every rechargeable battery also has an effective life, before you will begin to see some degradation of capacity, once again a good rechargeable battery will give you at least a year or two. if you are a regular user of batteries you will make your cash back tenfold before requiring to purchase new batteries, in comparison to purchasing single use batteries.

So should you fully discharge a battery before recharging?

Draining a battery to 0 volts (completely dead) can potentially cause damage, leading to a reduction in life of rechargeable batteries. if you obtain Duracell rechargeable batteries which potentially give you 1000 full charges and have a battery with 90% charge remaining, would you really want to flatten it fully with a charger (many do this for you) before recharging?

Use the batteries normally and when performance is no longer acceptable then just recharge them again. if this is truly bugging you then some of the top rechargeable battery chargers will let you discharge a battery to a specified voltage, before the recharging cycle begins. This is more friendly for the battery life than draining it completely to 0 volts and is similar to what would happen if you used rechargeable batteries in a digital camera. A digital camera will not drain them to 0 volts, it requires a certain voltage in order for the camera to switch on.

So what should you do?

People are unnecessarily caught up stressing about memory effect, and things that look like memory effect. Duracell rechargeable batteries or any of the best rechargeable batteries will most likely do the job, so just run out and get some and stop worrying.

Let’s say you spend $20.00 on 4 AA Duracell rechargeable batteries and give them only 100 of the 1000 suggested charges over a couple of years, which they will easily achieve, each battery will end up costing 5c a charge ($20.00 / 4 / 100).

The march of the HTC one line of devices continues, as AT&T prepares to deliver their next LTE phone. The HTC one X on AT&T is a little different from the HTC one X that was released in the UK not too long ago, swapping out the Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset for the LTE-supporting Snapdragon S4. on the inside we’ve got a pretty different phone now with a new set of expectations to meet, and some big shoes to fill as the flagship HTC device on AT&T.

Hardware

The HTC one X is a striking array of sharp lines and interesting textures. From the smooth glass surface on the front of the phone to the matte polycarbonate surface on the back with glossy transitions on the edges of the polycarbonate casing, the phone is pleasing to just hold in your hand and run your fingers across. in line with HTC’s more recent designs, the back of the phone is actually slightly larger than the front of the phone, causing the edge of the phone to taper in as it reaches the other side. The microphone jack and the power adapter are the only open holes along the sides of the phone, and each are well placed at the top of the device.

The downside to tapering your sides is the effect on the side buttons. while the volume rocker isn’t particularly hard for me to hit, the power button is far more difficult to hit when holding the phone with one hand. For all of the simple elegance that found its way into the design of the case, the camera slowly climbs out of the back of the phone until I am intentionally overcareful when I set the phone down on the back. When you set the phone down, it is clear that the phone props up the back of the phone. I do not hold out a lot of hope for the survival of the camera lens on this phone, at least without a case.

The AT&T variant of the HTC one X has had the Tegra 3 replaced with the dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4. this decision wasn’t met with rounds of applause, as you can imagine, but the Snapdragon S4 is no slouch. despite being a dual-core processor, the Snapdragon S4 delivers the same user experience. Benchmarks reveal that the two processors perform on par with each other, and the Nvidia chipset wasn’t able to deliver any better graphics quality in either real world usage or benchmarks. The only way that the Tegra 3 could be considered superior in is the fifth or “companion” core. in theory, the Tegra 3 should deliver longer battery life in inactive situations, for instance when the device is by your bed at night. in normal daily use, however, the UK version and the US version of the one X will perform similarly.

Battery Life

Like every other 4G LTE phone out there, the 1800 mAh battery built into the one X is only barely enough to get you through an 8 hour day. The exchange rate for blazing fast speeds and battery life are still very much at play here. If you are intentionally careful with the device, you’ll get 10 hours of use out of it. unfortunately, you won’t be packing extra batteries for the one X, since the battery is not removable. If you are connected to WiFi or in what AT&T calls a 4G network, and not an LTE network, you will obviously get far better battery life. Connecting to WiFi will get you about 18 hours of battery life.

Even with LTE on, the one X rests very well, draining very little battery when kept off the charger overnight.

Screen

It is not easy to compete in the screen arena right now. Apple’s Retina screen and Samsung’s Super Amoled+ screens are tough acts to follow. The HTC one X screen is a 720 x 1280 Super IPS LCD2 screen, and aside from winning the title of longest name for a screen it certainly gives the competition a run for their money. If it were possible to offer a balance between the intense colors and deep blacks of a Samsung screen and the crystal clarity of the iPhone Retina screen, HTC has got it nailed. Colors show up great, but not overpowering, while text is easy to read even at a distance. The 4.7-inch screen is great for watching videos as well, giving you plenty of screen real estate to catch a movie on.

Unfortunately, the LCD screen doesn’t perform quite as well as Samsung screens outdoors. When in direct sunlight, the phone is all but unusable. this is often a problem with LCD displays, since the backlight needed in order for them to compete with the sun would ruin battery life entirely. even when being used in a car dock, if the sun catches your screen you’ll lose whatever it is you were doing on the screen until the sun goes away.

Camera

Of all the smartphone manufacturers out there right now, HTC is clearly focused on making the cameras on their new devices the best. With the one X it shows. The backlit sensor on the HTC one X makes taking any kind of picture incredibly nice, and the marriage of HTC’s software and the Android 4.0 camera software make for a really great photography experience. The one X could easily replace your point-and-shoot for any picture that didn’t require an optical zoom. The camera app was designed for quick photos, and comes with plenty of settings to make your pictures even better. The camera app even does a great job with HDR shots.

When not taking pictures, the camcorder function has grown a few new settings as well. You can record something in slow motion, or take pictures while you record video, and everything happens in a snap with the zero shutter time capabilities of the camera. no other smartphone right now is able to do what HTC is doing with their cameras right now, and that will continue to give them a very serious edge moving forward.

HTC and AT&T

Like all of the HTC one devices, the X is running HTC Sense 4 which is based on Android 4.0. HTC has kept the AT&T version of the OS fairly similar to the rest of the one line, but there are some subtle differences. AT&T’s suite of Android apps, such as the barcode scanner, Navigation, and AT&T U-Verse TV. Curiously, in exchange for that AT&T apps, some of the HTC embedded apps are missing. For example, one of my favorite HTC apps is the flashlight app which allows me to use the camera flash as a small flashlight. The App is nowhere to be seen on the phone, and is very clearly on the HTC one S we recently reviewed. even the UK version of the one X has the flashlight app.

Another oddity of the software on the HTC one X is the functionality of the NFC chip on the device. When you turn NFC on, you are able to use NFC tags, and any third party app you install has the ability to write to NFC tags, but for some reason the device is not supported by Google Wallet. When you search for Wallet in the Play Store, you are allowed to install it, but when Wallet activates you are prompted with a warning that your carrier or manufacturer are not currently supported. There’s no further information available from Google, HTC, or AT&T at the moment on whether or not this will become available in the future.

Final Thoughts

The one X is a big phone. most people will want to use two hands when handling it, as its size exists between the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy Note. The Galaxy Nexus is just barely comfortable in my hand, and the power button placement on the Nexus has a lot to do with that. You basically have to choke up on the phone when you want to use the power button, or use your other hand to turn the phone on and off.

If you can get past the fact that you will probably need two hands for this phone, the one X is a pretty great phone. The phone absolutely ties the Galaxy Note for the title of best Android phone on AT&T right now, but doesn’t jump out as being the best hands down. hopefully AT&T and Google will get Wallet on the phone shortly, and I wouldn’t be caught without a case to protect that camera, but there’s no denying that the HTC one X is a very fast, very powerful handset.

Battery cells are found almost anywhere. In fact, every room in your house probably has one and you might even carrying one now, on your mobile phone. However, did you know what Li-ions, NiCads and NiMHs means? it is essential that you get familiar with these terms as batteries can influence the capabilities and features of your portable appliances including your phones. NiCad Batteries

NiCad is a short term for Nickel-Cadmium. it is one of the first commercially produced cells that are re-chargeable. In the past, these cells dominate the industry of battery. they utilize nickel hydroxide as anode and metal cadmium as the cathode. These types have a moderately low energy density. Often, the density is around 50 watt hours per kilogram. The advantage of the NiCads is that they can supply large amounts of energy quickly without damaging the device.

NiMH Battery

The Nickel-metal Hydride or NiMH cell is almost similar to NiCad batteries. Today, most of the available double A or triple A-type cells are made of NiMH. they are quite useful as they can be used in many different electric devices. Comparatively, they have higher energy density than the NiCad ones.

Since Cadmium can be poisonous, the integration of hydrogen absorbing alloy makes NiMH more preferable and more environmentally sound. However, these types cannot handle recharging efficiently. Energizer rechargeable batteries are good examples of NiMH batteries.

Li-Ion Batteries

Lithium-Ion battery is commonly found in laptops and cell phones. Typically, they are proprietary battery that uses lithium cobalt oxide as the positive electrode and carbon as negative electrode. However due to advanced technology, these cells change as often as possible. The exact composition of these electrodes now varies to enhance the battery performance and safety level. These types are designed light in weight and they have more energy density than NiMH. Unlike NiCards and NiMHs, they produce memory effect.

THOSE of us who grew up watching ventriloquist Ron Blaskett might find it hard to believe he turns 90 next Friday. the TV pioneer will celebrate with wife Merle, 87, and the family at a Chinese restaurant. but someone who won’t be spinning the lazy Susan is mischievous doll Gerry Gee. ”He’s in a suitcase,” Blaskett said. apart from entertaining families on the Tarax show on GTV-9 from 1957, Blaskett has another claim to fame. ”I’m the only survivor of the test transmission at nine.” and you may not know that his doll was made for the station and called Gerry Gee of GTV. Gerry was made by famous doll maker Frank Marshall, the Chicago craftsman who made the Charlie McCarthy doll for ventriloquist Edgar Bergen, the father of actor Candice Bergen. It was true love for Ron and Merle because she was also a ventriloquist, with a doll called Sandra Simpkins. Far from rocking on a rocking chair, Blaskett is entertaining folks over 50 after discovering a renewed interest in nostalgia. He does the rounds of retirement homes and Rotary and Probus clubs doing ventriloquism and showing footage of Graham Kennedy and the Tarax show. ”I never dreamt at my age I would still be doing shows.” at 90, most of his TV pals have passed on but he’s still friends with Philip Brady. ”I used to give him a lift to work. He’s earnest and a man you can trust.” Brady has a sidekick at 3AW, Bruce Mansfield, and despite popular perception, neither is a ventriloquist.

THE Human Headline must have a mountain of scrapbooks with all his headlines because here’s another: the 3AW host, former jailbird, author, liver transplantee and former home detainee has written a musical for the iGeneration called iFantasia. It’s a ”love story of old, transformed into the new world of iPhones and iPads” and will premiere at the Palms at Crown in January, much to the delight of his friend and PR doyenne Ann Peacock. Hinch also wrote the lyrics to music by Peter Sullivan who, with Mike Brady, gave footy fans up there Cazaly, and has enlisted the experienced hand of producer Dennis Smith. but that’s not all for 2013. Hinch is writing his 14th book, with the working title how do You Plead?, a telemovie and a film. I was exhausted hearing about it but mustered the energy to ask Hinch how many Duracell batteries power him. ”They’re Eveready,” he said.
