LEBANON TWP. — Hearings before the Board of Adjustment regarding a cell phone tower on Wilde Lane will continue on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the municipal building on West Hill Road.

New Cingular Wireless PCS (doing business as AT&T) is hoping to improve coverage for its customers along Route 513.

That company is seeking use and height variances to put the tower on a 32-plus-acre lot just off Route 513. the lot includes a house and one other building and is in a residential zone.Hearings began on Jan. 25. the company has a few more witnesses to present and some residents have hired their own attorney and will present their own expert witnesses.

New Cingular still has an application pending before the planning Board for another site on Route 513 near Voorhees High School. the action deadline for that application has been extended until March.

Imagine a cell phone battery that stayed charged for more than a week – and recharged in just 15 minutes. That dream battery could be closer to reality. Researchers at Northwestern University have created an electrode for lithium-ion batteries – rechargeable batteries like those found in cell phones and iPods – that allows the batteries to charge more quickly and hold a charge up to 10 times longer than current technology. Researchers say the technology could pave the way for more efficient, smaller batteries that could be useful in electric cars.

A paper describing the research, “In-Plane Vacancy-Enabled High-Power Si-Graphene Composite Electrode for Lithium-Ion Batteries,” was published in October in the journal Advanced Energy Materials. “We have found a way to extend a lithium-ion battery’s charge life by 10 times at the beginning of the battery’s life,” said Harold H. Kung, professor of chemical and biological engineering and the lead author of the paper. “even after 150 charges, which would be one year or more of operation, the battery is still five times more effective than lithium-ion batteries on the market today.” Lithium-ion batteries charge through a chemical reaction in which lithium ions are sent between two ends of the battery, the anode and the cathode. as energy in the battery is used, the lithium ions travel from the anode, through the electrolyte, and to the cathode; as the battery is recharged, they travel in the reverse direction. with current technology, the capacity of a lithium-ion battery is limited in two ways. its energy capacity – that is, how long a battery can maintain its charge – is limited by the charge density, or how many lithium ions can be packed into the anode or cathode. in current rechargeable batteries, the anode – made of layer upon layer of carbon-based graphene sheets – can only accommodate one lithium ion for every six carbon atoms. to increase capacity, scientists have previously experimented with replacing the carbon with silicon, as silicon can accommodate much more lithium: four lithium for every one silicon. However, silicon expands and contracts dramatically in the charging process, causing fragmentation and losing its charge capacity rapidly. meanwhile, a battery’s charge rate – the speed at which it recharges – is limited by another factor: the speed at which the lithium ions can make their way from the electrolyte into the anode. Currently, that speed is hindered by the shape of the graphene sheets: they are extremely thin – just one carbon atom thick – but by comparison, very long. During the charging process, a lithium ion must travel all the way to the outer edges of the graphene sheet before entering and coming to rest between the sheets. and because it takes so long for the lithium to travel to the middle of the graphene sheet, a sort of ionic traffic jam occurs around the edges of the material. now, Kung’s research team has combined two techniques to combat both these problems. first, to stabilize the silicon in order to maintain maximize charge capacity, they sandwiched clusters of silicon between the graphene sheets. This allowed for a greater number of lithium ions in the electrode while utilizing the flexibility of graphene sheets to accommodate the volume changes of silicon during use. “now we almost have the best of both worlds,” Kung said. “We have much higher energy density because of the silicon, and the sandwiching reduces the capacity loss caused by the silicon expanding and contracting. even if the silicon clusters break up, the silicon won’t be lost.” Kung’s team also used a chemical oxidation process to create miniscule holes (10-20 nanometers) in the graphene sheets – termed “in-plane defects” – so the lithium ions would have a “shortcut” into the anode. Hyde was one of six hikers who became trapped in the high country of the northern range of the Bridger Mountains during a snow storm on Saturday.

Originally, a group of 10 people was at Hardscrabble filming wildlife when it began to snow. One of the people had a helicopter come to pick up four of them, but by the time the helicopter could get back to the area for the other six, the conditions were too poor to land.

That is when search and rescue was called and the group began to hike down to an area near the Bridger Range ridgeline. using a little know-how they remaining members of the party were able to manipulate a call phone.

“Our cell phone battery was charged to begin with, but the bitter cold slows batteries up a bit at the best of times. after that thing gave up on us we were able to jerry-rig it so we had power from a camera battery,” Demetri Price, one of the rescues hikers said.

About 25 volunteers participated in the search, including search and rescue members, the U.S. Air Force and air ambulance crews. the hikers were found early Sunday morning when they were spotted by the Air Force just before sunrise. they refused medical help.

Like last year’s Samsung HM3600 ($59.99, 4 stars), the $39.99 Samsung HM1800 is an inexpensive mono Bluetooth headset with a small, minimalist design. it improves upon the HM3600 in a number of ways, but suffers from two of the same drawbacks. Poor noise cancellation and a lack of A2DP streaming mean that this headset is only useful if you plan to keep your calls indoors.

Design, Fit, and Pairing The HM1800 measures 1.6 by .7 by .4 inches (HWD) and weighs .28 ounces, placing it among the tiniest Bluetooth headsets we’ve tested. Made entirely of plastic, with a black body and dark gray front panel, it looks unobtrusive and classy. The top edge is home to a hardware power switch and LED indicator light. The back edge holds a covered microUSB charger port, while the bottom edge features two volume control buttons. The front panel contains the headset’s multi-function Talk button.

The headset features an on-ear design, which means the rubber ear tip rests on your ear rather than in your ear canal. it comes with two identical, detachable plastic ear hooks, along with three different rubber tips. one of those tips is meant to be worn in conjunction with an ear hook, while the other two allow you to use the HM1800 without a hook. Of these, I found the hook to be the most comfortable, secure option. one of the standalone rubber tips fit my ear more comfortably than the other, but neither made the headset feel completely secure. Using the hook felt safer, and because the headset is so light, it barely felt like it was even there.

The HM1800 is automatically set to pairing mode the first time you turn it on. For subsequent pairings, just hold down the Talk button for three seconds until a voice prompt says “Ready to pair.” The HM1800′s uses a voice prompt-based interface that provides battery and connection status updates, along with usage instructions. I found it helpful, but you can turn it off if you’d like.

Voice Quality, Noise Suppression, and Conclusions The HM1800 is a multipoint headset, so you can pair it with two devices simultaneously. For this review I paired it with an Apple iPhone 4S ($199.99, 4 stars) as well as a Samsung Galaxy Nexus ($299.99, 4 stars). I had no trouble pairing the headset to either phone or initiating voice dialing. Battery life is good, too, at 7 hours and 36 minutes of talk time. according to Samsung, the headset should last for over twelve days on standby. given its small size, those numbers aren’t too shabby.

Voice quality is mostly good, minus one key element: noise cancellation. Voices sound rich and full through the headset, if just a touch muddy. And calls placed with it are clear, if somewhat thin. Samsung doesn’t specify what type of noise suppression technology the HM1800 employs, but calls placed outdoors were extremely difficult to hear, even when it wasn’t that noisy. Lots of wind came through, along with plenty of ambient noise I barely even noticed while placing the call. For that reason, I wouldn’t recommend this headset if you mostly plan to use it while on the go.

Additionally, the Samsung HM1800 doesn’t support A2DP, so you can’t use it to listen to streaming media like apps, audiobooks, music, or podcasts, on your cell phone.

The Samsung HM1800 is small, inexpensive, and features mostly good call quality. The lack of A2DP is understandable at this price, but poor noise suppression holds this headset back. The Plantronics M50 ($49.99, 3.5 stars) is another good budget option, as it adds A2DP streaming into the mix, though it too suffers from mediocre noise cancellation. The Samsung HM6450 ($99, 4 stars) is a better buy, thanks to its improved outdoor transmission quality. While it lists for $99, you can pick one up for less than $50 from numerous retailers. And if you need to be sure you can use your headset anywhere, the pricey Jawbone Era ($129.99, 4.5 stars) is tops for noise suppression, along with the previous-generation Jawbone Icon ($99.99, 4 stars).

“The costs of inaction – and the costs of incorrect action – are enormous,” said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last month.

Among other things, the challenge demands freeing up underused capacity in the airwaves, such as the television “white space” used as a buffer between channels. But the FCC, Congress, industry players and consumer advocates are arguing about the appropriate approach.

It should come as a surprise to precisely no one that AT&T, the largest wireless carrier, is an enthusiastic champion of that clause.

“What we need from Congress is prescriptive legislation on how these auctions should be performed,” AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said on a recent conference call.

The House bill would also restrict the FCC from reserving any of what it acquires in the auctions as unlicensed spectrum, which isn’t allocated to specific companies. Entrepreneurs freely working with unlicensed spectrum created all sorts of wireless applications, like garage-door openers, baby monitors, cordless phones and Wi-Fi.

It seems legislators want to protect the delicate telecom giants from any sort of existential challenges that might result from a wider field of unlicensed wireless experimentation – like perhaps a next-generation Wi-Fi standard that’s faster and farther reaching.

Unlicensed use

Mark Cooper, director of research for the Consumer Federation of America, argues the FCC should set aside at least one-sixth of the new spectrum for unlicensed use. In an economic analysis released last week, he said: “By every measure of economic performance – device shipments, users, usage, efficiency, value and innovation – the unlicensed model has equaled or exceeded the exclusive licensed model in the past decade.”

In another addition to the bill, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., inserted an amendment that would bar the FCC from imposing so-called net neutrality rules on acquirers of the spectrum. such regulations prevent companies from restricting certain devices, applications or content on their network.

“As a result, the winner of the spectrum auction would be able to throttle, block and discriminate however it sees fit,” wrote Michael Weinberg, staff attorney at consumer group Public Knowledge, in a blog post.

Backers of these provisions have wrapped them in the language of free markets, framing them as proud blows against big government regulators – and even evoking the boogeyman of creeping communism.

Mijares admitted that the launch of the Prada LG 3.0 maybe a little late especially after the latest offerings of smartphones and mobile designs and even higher technology versions from the top brands, but noted that they are banking on consumers who prefers handsets that are more chic, stylish and even goes for branded products like Prada.

Apart from the handset, each Parada LG 3.0 also comes with a Prada-designed headset and a separate Bluetooth headset, and charger.

The Prada LG 3.0 is the third handset from the Prada and LG collaboration that started in 2006 and resulted in the Prada LG 1.0 – the first ever touchscreen mobile phone in the world and is now part of the permanent collection in new York City’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Shanghai – that was launched in 2007, and the Prada LG 2.0 in 2008 which features the Link technology that allows easy access to caller ID, SMS text messages, call history, call block and two-way alarm notification.

1. Internet search engine. This will usually only apply if the number you are trying to trace back is an 800 number or an 888 number, or any other generic looking type number. By simply typing in the number in a search engine you very well may find the origin of the call. Either from it being a business, or from individuals receiving the same phone number call and they’ve used software (see #3) to track down the number themselves.

2. Pay phone. This is worth mentioning because often times it’s forgotten that you can get away with being anonymous by using a pay phone. You can call the number yourself on a pay phone and then by the voice, greeting, or introduction you may be able to figure out who’s been calling you. Of course this simple method leaves out other information like specific name and address (see #3), but if it is a simple case of tracing back a number to someone you may suspect, then this could work.

3. Reverse phone call websites. Now days there are actual websites you can go to that will trace back the phone number that you type in. not only that, but in many cases they will return a name, city, and even address of where the call is coming from This works with both land lines and cell phones. Ideally this is the way to go if you really want to trace a phone number, while staying anonymous.
