We’ve finally got our hands on the mid-range offspring of the Nokia-Microsoft partnership, the Lumia 710. the Windows Phone powered smartphone just sits perfectly in between its entry-level sibling Lumia 610 and its high-end counterpart Lumia 800. Check out our full review after the break.

Before we proceed to the full review, its best that we check what comes with the Lumia 710. the Lumia 710 comes in a fairly large slide-out box.

Sliding the inner box will reveal the handset resting at the top. Taking the handset out will show a case that conceals the two handbooks, the User manual and Warranty Information. under that is where you can find the phone’s accessories which are divided accordingly by a carton divider. the Lumia 710 comes with the bare essentials, a larger than usual charger, USB cable, a 1300mAh battery and an in-ear headset.

The in-ear headset is great addition to the phone’s accessory as it produces above average sound quality. its design deeply resembles that of the Promac PRO one without the flat cables. it also comes with 3 pair of silicon tips for a more perfect ear fit.

Although almost entirely made of plastic, the Lumia 710 doesn’t look too cheap compared to other plasticky phone. Because of the material used, the handset is lightweight and easy in hands. the front of the phone sports a 3.7” screen that, as with its high-end Lumia siblings, utilizes Nokia’s ClearBlack Technology for an improved outdoor legibility.

Just below the screen is the three embossed physical buttons (Back, Home and Search) which are common to all Windows Phone operated smartphones.

At the top of the phone, is where the power button is located along with the two exposed ports which are the 3.5mm audio jack and micro-USB port.

The volume rocker and camera key can be found on the right side of the phone. not much going on the left and bottom of the handset besides the secure latch of the back cover on the left and eyelet hole for lace at the bottom.

The matte finish of the replaceable back cover adds more grip and ease of handle. the back of the phone also features the 5MP camera, an LED flash and several holes for the loudspeaker. under the cover is where the Micro SIM compartment can be found.

The 3.7” screen is just enough for comfortable typing and video playback. Texts are just the right size, colors are properly reproduced and viewing angles are decent. and with the addition of Nokia ClearBlack technology, the viewing experience is even more enhanced. the polarizing technology really lives up to its purpose as I didn’t have any problems reading texts or looking at pictures even on direct sunlight. Another thing a like about this technology is that the phone doesn’t have to exert too much juice to provide its user a legible display outdoors and vibrant colors indoors.

The loudspeaker of the Lumia 710 is a bit on the downside as the sound output is a little bit too soft as compared with other phone. though not as soft as the sound output through the loudspeaker, I feel like the loudness through the audio port is a bit lacking but should suffice for casual listening. This is also the case for making and taking calls, but not to the point of the speech is inaudible. This part is a bit subjective as people don’t have the same hearing, so I suggest trying it for yourself.

Nokia did little to alter the UI of their Windows powered Lumia line-up. From WP7’s deep SNS integration to its minimalist UI design, the Finnish company just stuck with what Mango and its Metro UI has to offer and left it untouched.

But what sets the Lumia handsets apart from other handsets running on WP7 is a handful of Nokia apps that in essence is aimed at making life easier (or so they say).

One of these apps is the Nokia Maps which is pretty much the same as the map that comes pre-installed with the OS which makes it redundant. Another is app is the WP version of the OVI Maps, coined Nokia Drive. IMO it would have been better if these two apps were just combined into one useful app as both of them serves almost the same purpose.

Transitioning from an old phone or a secondary phone can be a pain the neck, Nokia knows this and they tried to make it a little bit easier through an app called Nokia Contacts Transfer.

An active Bluetooth connection is all that is needed to transfer contacts from a phone to your Lumia handset. of course you can always sync your contacts using your Windows Live ID, but this feature is great especially because you can do contacts transfer offline.

Now if you got a Lumia handset bundled with a postpaid plan, it’s likely that your phone is locked to that telco. in most cases, that’s the end line for your hopes of using a different provider on your phone (unless you pay an extra to get your phone unlocked by cellphone geek or tinker with your phone yourself). Luckily, Lumia phones has this app called Network setup that lets you unlock your phone with ease so you can put a different telco’s MicroSIM in your Lumia phone as long as you get an unlock code from the telco that came bundled with the phone.

In terms of responsiveness, the Lumia 710’s configuration is more than enough to give its users a snappy response even on most tasking situations. This is shown by its impressive benchmark results using WP Bench Free and Benchmark Free.

Here’s the result and how it fared against other smartphones.

Browsing using the Internet Explorer mobile browser is fast as expected. Pages load quicker and lags are tolerable. Everything was good until I found out that the phone doesn’t support Flash or even Silverlight. it would have been better if it does have support for it, but nevertheless browsing experience is still nice.

The 5MP camera of the Lumia 710 may not sound too capable, but the picture quality says otherwise. the shooter is capable of capturing vivid colors with minimal amount of noise given its low megapixel count.

Users can capture stills using the physical shutter key or touching the screen. the only thing that I didn’t like about it is the physical shutter key. Focusing using physical shutter can take a bit of getting used to as the key is just as the same height as the removable back cover making it difficult to focus on a subject and cause accidental captures. But after some time and little bit of practice, users should get the hang of it. it is also worth mentioning that the uncomfortable shutter key can launch the camera app from the lock screen in amazing fashion. Users can switch from a sleep state to shooting pictures within a second.

The camera app is simple and easy to use. it also offers a range of customizations for those who are not content with the camera’s auto features. these customizations are: 11 scene modes (including auto), 6 White Balance modes (including auto), 9 notches of Exposure Value (from -2 to 2), 5 ISO adjustment (100, 200, 400, 800 and Auto), 3 Metering modes (Center Weighted, Frame Average and Center Spot), 5 Color effects (Normal, Black& White, Sepia, Negative and Solarize), 5 Contrast and Saturation adjustments, 2 Focus Modes (Normal and Macro), 2 available resolution (5MP @ 4:3 and 4MP @16:9) and 2 Flicker Reduction setting (@50Hz and @60Hz).

Being a single core device, the Lumia 710 is only limited to 720p video recording. But that doesn’t equate to a crappy video clip as show in the sample video recording that I took using the phone.

Note: I’d like to apologize for my shaky hands that resulted in to a shaky video. it was 34 degrees outside at the time of shoot and my hands just got off from a very heavy Canon 7D with an equally heavy Sigma Lens.

I find the virtual keyboard of the Lumia 710 comfortable to use. Given the not so big 3.7” screen and my fat fingers, it’s surprising that I only rarely find myself mistyping words. I got so comfortable using it, that parts of this review was done using the Lumia 710’s virtual keyboard.

Talking about the battery life, the Lumia 710’s 1300mAh BP-3L battery may seem to be lacking on paper but its performance is actually quite decent.

With minimal use (few text messages, few short calls, a couple of minutes of game time, and occasional checking of email) I was able to squeeze in 3 days’ worth of juice out of the phone. But in moderate to heavy use (with 3G connectivity and WiFi), the Lumia 710’s small capacity battery proves to be a bit short in giving a satisfactory performance as it didn’t even got me through half a day. nevertheless, a single charge should suffice to get you through a day of normal use and users can extend the life even more with the help of Windows Phone’s battery saving feature.

Overall, I find that the Lumia 710 as a very decent phone that has the needed configuration and functionalities enough to take on almost every smartphone needs of a user. I like the addition of Nokia’s ClearBlack Technology and how it was able to compensate for the lack of an AMOLED screen. though not as visually stunning as devices with AMOLED (Super AMOLED) screens, the Lumia 710 is still capable of displaying rich colors and provide very decent outdoor legibility.

The plasticky design may be a deciding factor for some, but IMHO I am looking at two possible deal–breaker for this phone; its 8GB non-expandable storage capacity and shortage of apps in the Marketplace. although the latter can be improved over time (hopefully), there’s not much a user can do about the storage. of course there’s the Windows Live SkyDrive to up the storage. It’s great when you’re online, but totally useless when not and is just enough to substitute a physical storage. for users who often use their smartphone for browsing, the Internet Explorer browser though fast is lacking support for flash. the battery life could also prove crucial to the success of the Lumia 710, but if you’re not a power-user the 1300mAh should suffice.

Understanding how to get a real estate license in new Jersey is fairly straightforward. the licensing process is governed by the new Jersey Real Estate Commission (the NJREC). There are just four steps candidates need to complete, and all 4 steps must be completed within one year of the last day of the required Salesperson Prelicensure course.

1. the Commission requires all licensing candidates to take a mandatory 75-hour prelicensure course at an accredited real estate school. In order to meet the minimum attendance requirements, students may not miss more than 20% of the 75 course hours, for a maximum of 15 total hours absent. Students must also pass the final exam administered by the school itself.

Tip: Choosing an accredited school is an important decision; students should take care to get references from people active in the business, and whenever possible, listen to the instructor teach before registering for classes at any particular school.

2. Once students have successfully completed the prelicensure course, they are eligible to sit for the NJ Salesperson’s Licensing Exam. the exam is currently administered by a testing company called PSI Exams. Students must pass this computerized exam with a 70% or better. the exam is graded immediately and candidates are told whether they have passed or failed the exam before leaving the testing center. a PSI Score Report will be issued accordingly – candidates receive either a pass notice or a report indicating which subject areas they need to improve.

Tip: If a candidate does not pass initially, he or she my retake the Examination again by waiting 24 hours and then calling the testing center to reschedule.

3. After passing the State Exam, candidates need to schedule an appointment with a company called Sagem Morpho to have their fingerprints taken electronically for the purpose of a criminal history record check. Candidates receive paperwork and a receipt on-site after completing their appointment.

Tip: your fingerprints are only good for 90 days, so do not schedule an appointment for fingerprints until AFTER you have passed the State Exam

4. After completing steps 1 – 3 noted above, candidates may bring their PSI Score Report and Sagem Morpho paperwork & receipt to their future real estate brokerage company (i.e., the company for whom the candidate intends to work). the brokerage will in turn submit the candidate’s application to the NJREC for review.

Tip: Although we are not calling it out as a specific step in the process, please understand that deciding which company to work for is absolutely critical in developing your career, so it’s important to do everything you can to make an informed decision.

Noteworthy: Any discussion regarding how to get a real estate license in new Jersey should also advise candidates that, as a Salesperson, they must work for a Licensed NJ Brokerage company. however, once a Salesperson has worked in the business for 3 years on a full-time basis, they are eligible to further their education and apply to become a Licensed Broker themselves.

The genre seems harmless enough as an idea: they’re just romance-driven games. Romance is a part of most people’s lives, what’s the big deal?

I’ve yet to meet anyone who says they play the Mass Effect franchise for the combat. Despite this, Bioware has focused on refining the combat enough that by Mass Effect 3, the franchise has a multiplayer mode that relies entirely on the action — and it’s considered addictive. Even so, the acclaim for the third person role playing shooter still rests largely on the interpersonal relationships you foster with your crew mates. The combat being OK is just a bonus.

The only reason the fate of the galaxy matters is because of the people you’ve met along the way. without the people, none of the politics, choices or consequences in Mass Effect mean a thing. Mass Effect 2 outright concedes this — the game revolves around the acquisition of your “dirty dozen” team. The real danger isn’t with the Collectors, or with the destruction of the galaxy, but rather with the possibility of losing those team mates in the suicide mission. This is also why the memorial wall in Mass Effect 3, which lists fallen comrades, carries weight with players. Mass Effect isn’t about the choices, it’s about people and your relationships with them.

So when fellow Kotaku writer Evan Narcisse states that you need the combat in Gameological‘s video series The Digest, I couldn’t help but muse over the viability of a combat-less Mass Effect.

Plus, we have an over-abundance of violence in games, but not nearly enough love

Something that would focus only on what makes the series so good: the characters and your relationships with them.

Sounds like — gasp! — a dating sim to me.

Actually, a lot of games could totally work as dating sims. The idea that games need combat in order to remain interesting doesn’t sit well with me. I don’t think it’s true. plus, we have an over-abundance of violence in games, but not nearly enough love.

Here are a few examples of games that with some refocusing could function as dating sims, from titles with strong writing and characterization, to a few silly ones because why the heck not? Hey, if there is a dating sim about pigeons, I’m convinced there can be a dating sim about anything.

Some, Like Mass Effect, would Lend Themselves well to It…

The possibilities for juicy drama here are endless. we can probably assume Bioware will use some of their usual tropes when it comes to pursue-able characters: the difficult, cold but sexy one (Miranda, Morrigan), the meek, kind but bright one (Tali, Merrill), and so on. aside from that, to stereotype, each race has specific issues that can yield interesting results when explored in the context of intimacy. Quarians have to deal with being out of the suit, Asari tend to be overly sexualized, the way the Volus communicate is obtuse, for instance.

The special app released with Mass Effect 3, which sent players messages from the characters, could be put to good use here, too. Imagine composing text messages to your prospects, like you can in Catherine. If Bioware must include some sort of “morality bar”, it should work like Dragon Age 2‘s friendship/rivalry bar — meaning, there’s multiple ways to get to know someone, depending on your approach.

If there are toothbrushes with tiny mass effect fields, I wonder if there’s lingerie with mass effect fields, too? there better be, because that’s what I want to gift my lover on the night before the suicide mission.

Some, like Animal Crossing, would be amusing…

Domesticity and small-town life isn’t complete without romance, and so I think Animal Crossing can become more of a dating sim. This is a franchise that could take on the dating sim genre in a whimsical way.

The absurdity of having the various critters available to the player can’t be denied. Still, the possibility for endearing relationships are there, especially when you consider the bizarre but amazing dialogue found in the franchise.

Imagine explaining to your beau that you’re late to your date because damn Rosetti wouldn’t let you go. Or sending a saucy letter to the giraffe next door with the world’s most cacophonous gyroid attached. perhaps sharing the stresses of having Mr Nook breathing down your neck for payment of your house with a significant other. Or throwing a bottle out at sea, with an earnest hope that that special someone will receive it and reciprocate your blindly-thrown longing.

I’d play that.

Some, Like Persona…Kind Of already Are One

Honestly, I already play this role-playing franchise as if it was a dating simulator. Persona brings out the worst in me, romantically. Since there’s no penalty for pursuing every potential love interest, I kind of just… become a womaniser. I’m going to blame the “gamer neurosis” of needing to experience everything in one go and not some latent Casanova nature in me, though. Yeah. Let’s go with that.

Speaking seriously, like Mass Effect, much of what makes Persona so superb is in the characters. The game as a whole is an exploration of intimacy, particularly so in Persona 4, which had players help characters through the most personal of insecurities and fears. Learning to play Persona effectively is to learn how to maximise your time outside of the dungeon, to spend as much time as possible with the people. Traversing through the dungeons feels like the unimportant after-school activity that it is when your calendar is a mess of dates with lovers and friends.

The school setting is perfect for the genre. there would be 22 characters, one for each of the major Arcanas, each equipped with a captivating personal narrative for players to discover. The part about shadows and deities can still stay, since the franchise wouldn’t make sense without that element. really though, in trying to describe how this would work it just becomes obvious that the game is already built like a dating simulator.

All I ask is that in a more “romance-centered” Persona game, there be more options to destroy your friends when they get in the way of your dates.

And some, like Fallout, are getting made into them

I’m cheating, here. This game already exists — someone is working on it. Hailing from Tumblr, a place that is no stranger to the type of fan service that this game caters to, is the Fallout New Vegas dating sim.

So far it looks as if the pursuable characters include Butch DeLoria (the only Fallout 3 character), FISTO, Cass, Oliver Swanick, Veronica, Joshua Graham and Vulpes Inculta. Not the characters I’d think of first (I wanna date Moira, from Fallout 3!), but it’s a rich and diverse cast.

Alexis — the 19-year-old developer behind the title — is taking a lot of fun liberties with the characters she’s borrowing from the franchise. This is evident from the hilarious character animations.

also included: a tsundere character, Ouran references, Hellboy references, and a karma system. and yes — Butch DeLoria delivers his infamous “Tunnel Snakes Rule!” line.

The game’s Tumblr states that the game will come out relatively soon. As proof of concept, it works wonderfully to prove that games you might not expect as dating sims could still work under that genre — with the right approach.

The list goes on. Metal Gear Solid could be a hell of a soap opera dating sim, complete with overwrought dialogue and labyrinth-like plotlines. well, if confusing as heck plotline is what we’re looking for, then perhaps Kingdom Hearts could be a better choice. God knows what’s going in in THAT franchise, but it’s dramatic enough that it would fit just fine. Saints Row could have players recreate a Romeo and Juliet-type romance, with rival gangs fighting to keep you and your lover apart. really, there’s a ton of games that could work as dating sims.

Granted, getting people to brave the stigma of playing the genre that is widely taken as the epitome of uncomfortable nerd wish fulfillment might be difficult. at the same time, many popular franchises — like Mass Effect and Persona — are good because of the near-dating sim elements they posses. I think we collectively like to pretend otherwise, though — thinking of some games as ‘dating simulators’ seems kind of shameful. it shouldn’t.

We definitely don’t need combat to make a game worthwhile; sometimes that’s the least interesting aspect of a game.

And sometimes, it would just be funny to make a game that’s not meant to be romantic, be romantic.

The mobile gift-giving app Karma announced Friday it has been acquired by Facebook. the announcement came shortly after the markets closed on Facebook’s first day as a publicly traded company.

Karma allows users to buy gifts from its catalogue from their mobile phones. Recipients receive a text message notifying them of the gift and directing them to a website where they can exchange it if they want to and enter their shipping address.

Karma, which launched in 2011, is already integrated with Facebook. Karma draws from Facebook profiles to notify users of friends’ birthdays, for example. the app will retain its functions after the acquisition, according to a blog post from Karma’s founders.

The move continues Facebook’s push to enhance its mobile offerings, where it currently generates less revenue per user than it does on the desktop. the app’s commerce features could suggest Facebook plans to expand in that area.

Ray Valdes, an analyst with Gartner, noted that Facebook has “a strong historical pattern” of buying companies to get access to their expertise.

“I would interpret [the move] as acquiring general talent, but also experience in a particular domain, which is in this case, mobile, commerce and social interaction,” Valdes said.

Police in London have adopted a new system that will allow them to quickly extract data from suspects’ phones.

The Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom has started the roll out of a new system that’s capable of extracting data from mobile phones extremely quickly. the technology comes from Radio Tactics and is called ACESO. the data extraction solution will be used across 16 boroughs in the capital. ACESO allows police to quickly extra data from the mobile phones (even SIM locked phones) of suspects while they’re in custody.

The Metropolitan Police will be using the ACESO Kiosk, which is a touchscreen desktop set-up.  Deputy Assistant Commission of the Metropolitan Police Service, Stephen Kavanagh, explained that it will be used when a suspect is arrested and found with a phone that police suspect may have been used in crime. Kavanagh said traditional methods of data extraction involve sending the phone to the lab for analysis while the new system will give officers immediate access to the phone’s data while the suspect is still in custody.

“Mobile phones and other devices are increasingly being used in all levels of criminal activity,” Stephen Kavanagh, Deputy Assistant Commission of the Metropolitan Police Service,” said in a statement. “Our ability to act on forensically-sound, time-critical information, from SMS to images contained on a device quickly gives us an advantage in combating crime, notably in terms of identifying people of interest quickly and progressing cases more efficiently,” he later added.

As many as 300 Met personnel will be trained on the system.

MANILA, Philippines – the Philippines is still a Nokia country, an executive of the mobile phone maker said during the launch of its latest model, the Lumia 610.

“the Philippine market is a very strong Nokia market. It still is a Nokia country. Nokia is in the hearts and minds of Filipinos,” Dharmesh Goshalia, the company’s general manager and head of sales for the Philippines told reporters Friday night.

“This is one of the reasons why we brought different Lumia products. we want to address the different price segments and we believe that each of the products fits all brackets,” said Goshalia, who however refused to disclose Nokia’s market share in the country.

Besides the 610, Nokia also launched recently the Lumia 710 and 800, all of which run on the Windows platform. the company next month will begin offering the Lumia 900.

“we would say that the products we are launching now are the right products needed in this market. the range of smartphones that we are bringing into this market covers all segments of the smartphone from the entry level all the way to the top,” Goshalia said.

“I would that if I look at the anticipation in the Philippine market, the anticipation is growing day by day. This is something that consumers are anticipating. there are a lot of pre-orders,” he said.

Nokia has been under siege worldwide, as Apple and Blackberry, not to mention other smartphone makers that use the Android platform, gain popularity.

The U.S. International Trade Commission handed Microsoft a victory in one of its patent disputes with Motorola, banning the import of some Motorola phones.

The agency found that Motorola violated a Microsoft patent for that software that creates meeting requests and schedules them on mobile devices. Motorola will likely need to alter the software in the phones before they come into the United States.

The ruling is now subject to a 60-day presidential review. Motorola has to post a bond of 33 cents for each phone that has entered the United States.

“Microsoft started its ITC investigation asserting nine patents against Motorola Mobility,” Motorola said in a statement. “Although we are disappointed by the Commission’s ruling that certain Motorola Mobility products violated one patent, we look forward to reading the full opinion to understand its reasoning…. We will explore all options including appeal.”

The dispute revolves around Motorola’s use of the scheduling technology in some of its devices, including Droid phones and Xoomtablets, that run Google’s mobileAndroid operating system. Microsoft argued that the software infringed on its ActiveSync technology.

An administrative law judge ruled in December that Motorola infringed on one of the nine patents that Microsoft had cited. Today’s decision, from the full commission largely upholds that ruling.

“We’re pleased the full Commission agreed that Motorola has infringed Microsoft’s intellectual property, and we hope that now Motorola will be willing to join the vast majority of Android device makers selling phones in the US by taking a license to our patents,” Microsoft’s corporate vice president and deputy general counsel David Howard said in a statement.

Technology companies in recent years have increasingly turned to the ITC to settle their disputes. Companies can pursue an ITC case in parallel with civil lawsuits, and the threat of an embargo on products typically forces companies to settle more quickly.
